Maleficent Brings Girl Power To The Box Office!
Maleficent brought some major girl power to the box office this weekend with the number one movie, bringing in an estimated $70 million in the U.S.!
Maleficent surprised box office experts over the weekend by earning more than $15 million than predicted. The film retells the Sleeping Beauty story from the perspective of the villain, who despite her evil intentions doesn't turn out to be all bad.
Both the title character, Maleficent, and the young Princess Aurora are female powerful female characters. Maleficent also passes the Bechdel test with flying colors!
If you haven't heard of the Bechdel test, it's a test of gender bias. In order to pass, a film must have:
- At least two women characters…
- Who speak with each other…
- About something other than a man.
Though the test seems simple, you'd be surprised how many films fail the test!
Disney's last massive hit was Frozen, so it's great to see another spectacular girl power flick at the top of the box office yet again!
