Meghan Patrick Shares the Tale of Healing and Self-Love Behind ‘Whether You Love Me Or Not’

Canadian country sensation Meghan Patrick is one of our favorite fast-rising artists in the genre, and she's completely stolen our hearts with her latest single, "Whether You Love Me Or Not."

The track is as healing as it is empowering, with an irresistible country-pop sound as Meghan sings about overcoming the feeling of being undervalued in a relationship and putting the emphasis on loving herself instead. it's precisely the kind of self-love anthem we could all use, and we know it'll be especially powerful in a live setting. Lucky for fans, she also has a very big summer ahead of her, opening for powerhouses including Luke Bryan, Josh Abbott Band, Jon Pardi and Brantley Gilbert, as well as returning to the Grand Ole Opry on July 3. We had the honor of chatting with Meghan to learn more about the track and her big summer in the interview below.

The Story Behind 'Whether You Love Me Or Not'

Meghan Patrick: I would say this song came from a combination of different experiences—experiences with people who claimed to love me and want the best for me, but yet were constantly finding ways to cut me down. In general, feeling rejected or abandoned by someone you love is incredibly painful, and it can cause you to look inward and blame yourself and assume there is something wrong with you. It can be hard to let go of all the things they did and said to make you feel insecure. I've done a lot of my own healing and have worked hard to love myself after that kind of heartbreak, and I wanted to write a song that would inspire others to rise above the hurt and learn to love themselves too, whether or not they get that validation from others.

Meghan's Favorite Lyric

MP: I honestly just love the whole chorus lyrically. I wanted to really focus on the fact that even though it feels like your world is crumbling, the sun will still shine, life goes on and this, too, shall pass. Also, for me, my faith played a huge role in finding a way to trust that I would be okay and I would move on because God had a greater plan for me, and when I would pray for healing, He would always answer, and just because someone stopped loving and valuing me, it didn't mean I was alone.

On Her Upcoming Show at the Grand Ole Opry

MP: I'm still not over my Opry debut, if I'm being honest! Every time I get to step into the circle, it feels surreal, and it is such an honor. I also might be announcing something exciting that night, so it's going to be a really special night.

What's Next

MP: I will simply say that I am making the best record of my life. I've never been more proud of a project or worked harder in my life. This next chapter of my career means everything to me. It feels like the culmination of everything I've done, every lesson learned and the truest representation of who I am and my story. I can't wait to get it out in the world!
