5 Underrated Careers You Should Know About Before Heading to College

Everyone knows you can become a doctor, lawyer or engineer, but there aren't as many resources for those uninterested in the traditional routes.

Whether you're about to enter college or looking to change career paths later in life, we'd like to make your search easier. Continue reading to learn more about five industries you should consider.

Digital Marketing

Have a knack for social media? Digital marketing is perfect for you.

Digital marketing is the promotion of brands online, which most commonly includes social media but can also be other websites and emails. Working in digital marketing can mean cultivating the posts that go onto a company's Instagram page or sending out content to a subscribed email list. The best thing about (digital) marketing is that there is no one-size-fits-all recipe to success, so the world is your oyster of creativity and innovation.

The digital world is a rapidly growing industry, so you'll want to hop into this field as early as possible.

Copywriting

If you've ever wondered who creates the script for online ads or the description for your favorite makeup product, they're copywriters.

Essentially, copywriting is the act of making usually short-form, compelling bodies of texts that inspire the reader to take action. For a website like Forever 21, that might be convincing someone to buy the new Barbie collection, or for a small freelance business, trying to get someone to use your service.

The most important thing about copywriting is understanding the voice of the company. Is it edgy? Uplifting? Take a look at Rare Beauty and Fenty Beauty's websites. Notice how Rare uses specific youthful and encouraging language, versus Fenty, while still empowering, is cooler and more mature. That's the beauty of copywriting.

UI/UX Design

Without our UI and UX design, Sweety High would not be able to exist.

UI/UX designers are responsible for building websites or apps, for example, that are functional and aesthetically pleasing. UX (experience) designers make things easy for the consumer to use, UI (interface) designers make them beautiful, and the two designers work together to build the perfect product.

Like digital marketing and other fields in the tech world, UI/UX design is booming. And many of the jobs allow you to work from home, which is always a plus.

Influencer Outreach

It's always exciting to see what new brand partnership your favorite influencer will premiere. For example, Emma Chamberlain recently partnered with Canon Cameras to "inspire and amplify" the next generation of content creators.

Influencer outreach departments are the people who come up with ideas about who can promote their products. Most of the time, they will come up with a list of potential clients and work alongside their teams for a contract to use or speak about the item for a certain amount of time. They also might be responsible for pooling a list of creators for a promotional vacation—does anyone remember the infamous 2019 Dote trip to Fiji?

Human Resources

The hiring process can be daunting, but great human resources workers can turn an interview around into an uplifting and comfortable experience.

People in human resources are the ones who screen applicants. If they deem the candidate eligible, they'll set up an interview and move them to the next round, usually with the hiring manager.

While it can feel uplifting to hire someone for their dream job, human resources workers also have to resolve workplace conflict, fire people and turn down applicants after the interview. But it's an in-demand career, and job seekers are looking forward to a world with more kind and compassionate people in human resources. You can be the change!
