North Star Boys’ Oliver Moy Discusses the Group’s New Album, CYDIA and Going on Tour

2024 has proven itself to be a very big year for Asian-American boy group North Star Boys (NSB).

The eight-member group consists of Oliver Moy, Sebastian Moy, Justin Phan, Ryan Nguyen, Kane Ratan, Darren Liang, Regie Macalino and Tyler Bray, who across their social media pages have more than a whopping 55 million collective followers, and they're showing zero signs of slowing down. On May 31, they dropped their dreamy sophomore album, CYDIA, with seven tracks exploring the confidence of youth, the thrill of young love and what it means to grow up. They're also currently on their  2024 CYDIA North America Tour, which kicked off in Texas on June 5, hitting 19 cities across the United States until it concludes in Phoenix, Arizona, on June 29. There couldn't be a better time to be a fan, and as fans ourselves, we were honored to chat with NSB leader Oliver Moy to find out all about the album, the tour and all things North Star Boys.

Sweety High: What does the album title CYDIA mean to you? Why did that title track feel like the perfect summation of this group of songs?

Oliver Moy: CYDIA is a genus of a moth that plants itself into an apple and stunts the growth of the apple. The metaphor and meaning of CYDIA to us is the feeling of wanting to live in the current moment forever, a place of contention, happiness and passion. The album is a realization and understanding that everything does come to an end, and to appreciate the moment for what it is.

SH: What do you feel are the overarching themes of the album? What kind of feel do you hope fans take away from it?

OM: I would like the Stars to feel hopeful, youthful and passionate when listening to the album CYDIA.

SH: How would you describe the album's sound? Production-wise, how did you go about bringing these tracks to life?

OM: The production of the album CYDIA is inspired by memories of my childhood. I remember falling asleep in the backseat while my parents drove the car and played early 2000s music.

SH: How do you think you've evolved as artists since SATURDAY NIGHTS?

OM: Our project SATURDAY NIGHTS is a collection of moments throughout NSB and put into musical form. Our newest project, CYDIA is more of a message of the moment. Also, a message to our future selves to look back to.

SH: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

OM: The CYDIA tour has just started, and is going better than I expected. The Stars bring us so much joy in life and every day we wake up motivated to give our all at each show.
