Everything to Know About Using Onion (Yes, Onion!) in Your Beauty Routine

While delicious when cooked or added for flavor, onions alone can smell super stinky and can even make you cry—but should you be incorporating them into your skincare routine?

Onion is an unexpected skincare ingredient that's quickly becoming popular, thanks to its skin-clearing benefits which just might outweigh the cons. Onions are closely related to garlic, chives, scallion, and leeks (which aren't exactly the first ingredients that come to mind when it comes to skincare)—and they're high in Vitamin C and quercetin, which is an antioxidant helping protect your skin from free radicals.

So, how does all of this concern your skincare routine? Onion's high levels of vitamin C can have a brightening effect on the skin. Additionally, quercetin is a powerful antioxidant also found in blueberries that can help with aging, free radical damage, environmental damage and more. Onions are also a great remedy for diminishing blemishes and scars, including those from acne.

You could massage your face with some fresh onion juice to help fight off acne-causing bacteria, but TBH that sounds plain awful—although allegedly quite effective on pimples. The better solution is to find a skincare product with onion as an ingredient, which can help with breakouts, scarring and skin texture.

Below are two of our fave products that contain onion, so you can get all of the benefits without any of the stink.
