OverheardLA’s Emily Bernstein and Justyna Gawlik Dish on the Launch of the New OverheardLA Podcast

You'd probably have to be living under a rock not to know about the social media brand Overheard,  collecting more than 5 million follows as they share the funniest eavesdropped conversations overheard in L.A., New York, San Francisco, London and more.

What you may not know is that they just launched their new OverheardLA Podcast. Launched in October, the podcast is hosted by longtime Overheard family Emily Bernstein and Justyna Gawlik as they discuss living in L.A., read unbelievable DMs from fans and chat with notable guests about their most hilarious (and most excruciating) tales of life in Los Angeles. We had the opportunity to chat with the duo to learn all about the podcast in the interview below.

Sweety High: Can you both introduce yourselves?

Emily Bernstein and Justyna Gawlik: We've been working together at Overheard for the past six years—Emily as the creative and editor of the account, Justyna director of the brand.

SH: Tell us about the Overheard LA Podcast. What's the show about, and why are you the perfect hosts for it?

Emily and Justyna: After years of being the mysterious account that was always listening, The Overheard LA Podcast finally gave us a voice. The show pulls back the curtain on what it's like to work at Overheard LA, inviting listeners into our unconventional Venice office to read use submissions and interview some of our favorite icons. The authenticity comes through because it's hosted by the real people behind the account who have built this community from a single Instagram account to a multi-city media brand. We're very close, and still the ones on the other end when you send a DM. Also, we think we're pretty funny.

 

SH: What do you think it is about the energy and people of L.A. that make for an especially exciting and hilarious Overheard podcast?

Emily and Justyna: We love to satirize L.A. with a self-awareness that Overheard LA is a part of that. Our account has always held up a mirror to the ridiculous and funniest parts of living in this city while showing a love and appreciation for the energy that makes it unique. We're highlighting the things that make you say, "That's so L.A.," while allowing a community to come together and laugh at themselves. The Overheard LA podcast is a place for us to share all of the hilarious and human parts of life, whether you are local or listening from around the country.

SH: Have you had any favorite guests on the show recently? Why, and why?

Emily and Justyna: We've been incredibly lucky to have the most talented, interesting, and hilarious guests on the show so far. It's impossible to pick a favorite! It's so much fun to have celebrities, comedians and experts we admire "come to work" with us, and an intimate format for our audience too.

 

SH: What are both of your very favorite things about living in L.A.?

Emily: I have every dietary restriction known to man so it's a great city for that. And being outside.

Justyna: The relaxed lifestyle, and the abundance of really cute dogs.

 

SH: Is there anything else we should know about the show?

Emily and Justyna: Overheard LA wouldn't exist without our audience, and they're part of the show. When you participate in polls, question boxes and send DMs on @OverheardLA, your submissions may end up on the podcast. We love reading your crazy stories and questions with our guests and it's such a fun way to bring the Instagram account to life. You don't need to live in L.A. or have ever lived in L.A. to participate and enjoy the show. We look forward to hearing from you!
