After a Year, payton Makes His Return to Music With Fan-Favorite Single ‘CONTROL’
It's been over a year since payton's last musical release, but his sleek new single "CONTROL" proves the singer-songwriter is back in a big way in 2023.
"CONTROL" fuses R&B smoothness with a bit of rock edge to tell a story about a controlling relationship and begging to be let out of it, highlighting payton's vocals and charisma all the while. We got the chance to catch up with the artist to learn all about the story behind the track, his musical growth and what's next. Read the full interview below.
The Story Behind 'CONTROL'
payton: I made the song three years ago on a trip to Atlanta, right after I was letting go of a controlling relationship. It kinda stems from that situation—being taken advantage of, getting your kindness used against you.
What 'CONTROL' Means
payton: It means everything. This is one of the first songs I made when I first started recording music. The fans have been obsessed with it since I teased it in 2020. Really excited to give this one to the fans.

payton's Favorite Lyric
payton: My fave is the tail end of the song, after the last chorus. I'm just saying "Let you go" a bunch of times, but the vibe of that section is insane—it's like all the anger built up in the song is released. My favorite part to listen to, too.
On His Musical Growth
payton: My love for the art has grown even more. I've taken some time and spaced out really taken control of everything I've been creating. The music is so, so, so creative and I'm having the best time recently making stuff that's true to me. "CONTROL" is the perfect song to come back with because everyone already knows it and they've been begging for It. it's like my gift to the ones who care most for being so patient with me and my process.
