DIY the Most Magical Rainbow Pizza With This Simple Recipe
I eat pizza multiple times a week. You can call it an addiction or you can just say I know what I like. Let's say that.
For all you pizza lovers out there, I have a fun and easy new way to spice up your regular recipe. Instead of getting delivery or DiGiorno, you can make your very own rainbow pizza with just a few ingredients.
Check out my recipe below:
Ingredients:
- Mozzarella cheese, shredded
- Pizza sauce
- Pizza dough (I use the premade dough from Trader Joe's because I think it makes the best crust, but you can either make your own if you're feeling fancy or pick up another variety like Boboli or Pillsbury)
- Food coloring
- Desired toppings
Step 1: Prepare Cheese
If you're using the Trader Joe's brand of dough, take it out of the bag and let it rest on a lightly floured surface for 30 minutes. This gives the dough a chance to breathe and set so it makes the optimal crust. While your dough is resting and your oven is preheating to the degree specified on your crust, it's time to prepare your rainbow cheese.
Place a handful of mozzarella into a few separate bowls. Usually I use 3-4 different colors on my rainbow pizza, but the number is up to you. Start with one color first and add a few drops of food coloring into your cheese.
Stir until the color is evenly combined with the cheese and add more drops until your desired hue is created. If you want to mix colors, follow the guidelines on the back of your food coloring box. The first time I tried to make purple I used equal parts blue and red and ended up with a dark, streaky grey that went into the trash.
Repeat this process until all of your colors are mixed, making sure to clean your stirring utensil before you start each color.
Step 2: Prepare the Pizza
Now that your oven is preheated and your dough is ready to stretch, create the shape of your pizza. I like to prepare my pizza directly on the baking sheet so I don't have to transport the flimsy dough from my working surface to the oven.
I also lightly oil the baking sheet and the edge of my crust to give it a little crispiness. From there, add as much or as little sauce as you like. Sauce ratio is one of the great debates among pizza lovers.
Now it's time to add your rainbow cheese! You can sprinkle this on in whatever pattern you like. After trying it out a few times, I found that I like to start with one color in the center and work outwards to create rings of color. This way you get all of the colors on each slice of pizza. But you can go for a more tie-dyed approach, too.
Lastly, add whatever toppings you want. For a double-rainbow look, try a variety of colorful veggies like orange bell peppers and red onions.
Step 3: Bake!
The Trader Joe's dough specifies a cooking time of 8-10 minutes. These times will vary depending on your crust. A fully melted cheese is a good indication that your pizza is ready.

Step 4: Slice, Snap and Serve
Time to slice it up, snap a few pics and serve it to your dinner guests (or alternatively eat it all by yourself. You go girl, live your life!)
