A Definitive Ranking of the 10 Most Popular Pizza Toppings
Who doesn't love pizza?
No matter which way you slice it, it's always delicious. Even when it's not that great, it's still pretty darn good.
That being said, there are some toppings we tend to favor over others. Scroll below for our definitive ranking of the 10 most popular pizza toppings around!
10. Spinach
Spinach has its place, but it's definitely not on pizza. There's always too much of it packed onto any pie it tops, making it a bit difficult to eat sometimes. Not to mention, it's rarely ever cooked with the pizza. It always feels as if it's thrown on in a last ditch effort to bring some sort of pizzaz to the plate. If we wanted to chow down on the leafy green, we'd order a salad. But for our pizzas, we want them to be filled with more glutinous toppings.
9. Ham
Similar to spinach, we'll take ham in or on anything, except pizza. For some reason, the texture of it is always weird. It feels and tastes super slimy and watery, which also ruins the cheese. We can tolerate it on Hawaiian pizza, but that's about it. Anyone who just gets ham on their pizza is not a person we want to know.
8. Bell Peppers
We're big, big, big fans of bell peppers. We're those people who can bite into them like an apple and chow down hard. They're so good, except when they top our pizza. They're oddly overpowering, in terms of taste and texture. Bitting into one on a slice of pizza just feels wrong. We'll do it if there are other toppings, but we'd never order a pie with just bell peppers.
7. Pineapple
We're still not sure why pineapple on pizza is controversial, especially when there are far worse toppings to be concerned about (see No. 10), but we also kind of get it. It's fine, but that's about it. Again, it needs to be in a Hawaiian pie for us to really love it, but we don't detest it like so many people in the world. It's good, so let's just leave it at that.
6. Onions
We'll put onions in and on every dish. They add just the right amount of bitterness and crunch to whatever they're in, but they also don't really do much more than that. We almost like them over the other toppings because of the texture they provide. The aftertaste is more powerful than anything, so we also need to be sure we have gum or mints nearby when munching on a pizza topped with onions. That's a bit of a dealbreaker and why this topping doesn't rank higher.
5. Pepperoni
A classic topping if there ever was one, you can't go wrong with pepperoni. When it comes to being put on a pizza, it just makes the most sense. We don't know how that came to be, but you can bet we'll look it up and give you all a little history lesson later. We also don't even exactly know what type of meat it is, but we'll eat it. Anyway, pepperoni is fantastic. The meat itself was literally made for pizza, so what more could you ask for? The only reason it doesn't rank higher is that because there are better toppings and sometimes it can be a bit too salty for our liking. Thankfully, we can usually balance that out with some crushed peppers and parmesan cheese.
4. Extra Cheese
Yes, extra cheese counts as a topping, so don't @ us. What pizza can't benefit from more cheese? We're notorious for already pouring far too much parmesan onto every pie we eat, so it shouldn't be a shock that extra cheese ranked this high on our list. You really can't have enough cheese… well, sometimes you can and it does get to be a little too much. Yes, we'll admit that. But even then, a pizza with extra cheese is one of the best pizzas indeed.
3. Sausage
While everyone else may favor pepperoni as their pizza meat of choice, we're all about sausage over here. It can be in crumbles or think, juicy slices—no matter how it tops a pizza, it always tastes delicious. Even when it's burnt to a crisp or slightly undercooked, there's no meat we'd rather throw on our pie than this one right here. And you can use so many different types of sausages, too. From beef and chicken to Italian or German, a sausage-topped pizza never fails to satisfy our cravings.
2. Black Olives
Black olives are delicious as is, but even better on pizza. We could eat a whole can of olives by themselves, but we'd much rather prefer they top our pie. They could cover every inch of our pizza and that still wouldn't be enough. We really enjoy them, because they add the perfect pinch of saltiness to a savory pie. We'll probably get yelled at for ranking them so high on this list, but we don't care. We'll defend this choice to our death, so get ready to duke it out in the comments with us.
1. Mushrooms
Mushrooms will forever and always be our favorite pizza topping and you can't persuade us otherwise. Go ahead and try, but your efforts won't be rewarded. Now, you're probably wondering, Aren't these just as slimy and watery (if not, more) than ham? Don't they also have a weird texture? The answer to these questions is a resounding "yes." Mushrooms are slimy and weird in texture, but that's why we love 'em. They make no sense, other than the fact that they're all sorts of tasty. Thy could be as tough to chew as rubber and we'd still insist they're the best topping in the whole wide world. If you don't agree, you're wrong.
