With Pokémon GO’s New Max Out Update, Galar Region and Dynamax Pokémon Are On the Way

More than eight years after the initial release of Pokémon GO, there are still a million reasons to play—and the game is about to get a lot bigger with their new Max Out update.

Last week, we had the pleasure of hopping on a Zoom conference with the Pokémon GO team to learn all about what's to come from the iconic app, and while there's plenty we still can't reveal, we're excited to share some of the biggest changes on the way—including the eagerly anticipated arrival of Dynamax Pokémon.

Dynamax Pokémon Are Coming to Pokémon GO

Dynamax Pokémon, first introduced in Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, are Pokémon that temporarily grow in both size and strength to become gigantic, powerful Pokémon who can utilize special abilities called Max Moves. It's just been revealed that they'll be coming to Pokémon GO in the not-too-distant future.

Starting in September, special Power Spots will begin appearing around the world. Eventually, this is where Trainers will be able to discover and challenge Dynamax Pokémon, joining friends to take part in more challenging Max Battles to catch these epic Pokémon, but for now, you can start investigating these spots to collect newly discovered Max Particles. These Max Particles will play a key role in making the most of your captured Dynamax Pokémon down the line.

Galar Region Pokémon Debuts

If you're more into capturing than battling Pokémon, get excited, because more Pokémon from the Galar region are officially headed to Pokémon GO.

Starting Sep. 3, you'll be able to encounter starter Pokémon Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble, plus the dragon/ghost-type Pokémon Dreepy, as well as their full evolutionary lines. You'll also be able to hatch them from eggs. Trainers in the U.K. may also encounter Stonjourner for the first time.

Skwovet and Wooloo, two Pokémon from the Galar region that are already in Pokémon GO, will also finally be obtainable in their Shiny (rare alternate color) forms.

Hatching Shiny Galarian Pokémon Forms

A number of Galarian Form Pokémon already exist in Pokémon GO, including Meowth, Ponyta, Slowpoke, Farfetch'd, Zigzagoon, Darumaka, Yamask and Stunfisk. With this new update, when you hatch any of these Pokémon out of 7 km Eggs, there's a chance they'll be Shiny.

Max Out Special Research

With a new Special Research story, Trainers will be tasked with choosing a Galarian partner Pokémon, with branching paths and different Postcard Book backgrounds depending on their choice and the Season. This Special Research can be claimed for free between Sep. 3 and Dec. 3, so don't miss out on it.
