Turn Your Old Headphones Into Princess Leia Space Bun Headphones With This DIY
When I was researching the cutest Princess Leia-inspired accessories for another article, I was shocked to discover that I couldn't locate a single pair of Princess Leia space bun headphones.
To my dismay, I couldn't even find a DIY to create my own, so I adapted a Star Wars-inspired Leia headband DIY from As the Bunny Hops to make them. Here's how you can make Princess Leia headphones, too.
You'll need:
- A big spool of thick medium-brown yarn
- Scissors
- A glue gun and glue sticks
- An old pair of over-ear headphones
- Thick brown felt
Start by cutting 20 equally sized lengths of yarn—I made them about four feet long, but you can make them longer or shorter depending on the desired thickness of the space buns. Once cut, bundle them into two groups of ten.
Cut four pieces of thread into two-inch pieces and tightly tie off both ends of each bundle of 10 strings. Make sure that all 10 pieces are secured in the knot.
Next, use your scissors to tidy up the ends, being careful not to cut anything below your knot.
Next, using your glue gun, place a dot of glue in the center of your felt and glue down one of the ends. Twist your bundles of yarn to create a braided look use the glue to periodically secure the yarn to the felt in a spiral. Keep the glue toward the inside of the spiral for the neatest look.
Continue this process until you've created your entire Leia bun and secure the end with more glue, tucking it beneath the previous layer.
Repeat this entire process to create the second bun. Once dry, use your scissors to carefully cut both buns out of the felt. Cutting the yarn will cause the entire thing to fray, so use caution!
Before moving on to the next step, put on the headphones and adjust them so they fit perfectly—it's possible that after the next step, you won't be able to adjust them further. Use your brown yarn to snugly wrap around the entire band of the headphones, securing occasionally and at the ends with hot glue.
Last but not least, use glue to fasten the space buns to the outside of each ear piece and your look will be complete. You can use additional glue and felt to strengthen the internal integrity of the headphones, but make sure not to obscure each ear piece.
Once completely dried, your headphones will be ready to wear and rock anywhere.
