Was there any one moment in particular that inspired "Fight Song"?
After three months of attempting to write a "hit," my publisher, Amanda Berman, at Sony ATV called me and asked why I hadn't yet told my story. I didn't want to talk about the struggle, I told her I didn't want to go there. But I finally relented, more out of just the need to get it out. "Fight Song" was that story. The story of the many rejections I received from record labels, the countless closed doors; and despite all of it, that tiny but brave voice in my heart that wouldn't let me give up on myself or my dream.
What was the songwriting process like? Where were you, and what were you feeling at the time?
The song took me about a year and a half to write. I wrote the chorus (or a close version of it) with a friend. The rest of the song went through about 10 iterations (me wracking my brain for the perfect verse, bridge and structure). It was by far the hardest thing I've ever done. I tried producing it with three talented producers before I found Jon Levine, and none of them were giving me what I wanted. So I eventually started learning Logic and Ableton so that I could produce it myself. It was intense.
How would you describe "Fight Song" in 5 words or less?
Empowering, anthemic, honest, raw and emotional.
What has it been like to discover how much the song means to your fans?
It's been absolutely amazing. Honestly the best gift in the world.
What is it about the song that you think really resonates with people?
I think it reminds us that those mean voices in our heads that are saying we aren't good enough and that we can't do it, or it's too late…that they are not true. I think it empowers us to keep fighting for what we believe in and to never give up on ourselves.
You've asked fans to reach out and share their own stories with the #MyFightSong campaign. Are there any stories that have stood out to you in particular?
So so many. It's hard to pick honestly because all of them touch me so deeply. But I recently met an incredible little girl named Coco while I was in Reno; her story and her family's story really moved me. Oh! I also met Jeremiah!!! That was absolutely incredible. ? His sweet family started a campaign for me to meet this amazing little boy who is fighting cancer and who's wish was to meet me (check out the hashtag #rachelmeetjeremiah and see all of the beautiful requests). My band and I made sure we visited Jeremiah's hospital in Los Angeles and it was so inspiring.
