Definitive Ranking of the Most Iconic Friendship Rules From The Kissing Booth

Netflix's The Kissing Booth has become quite the rom-com phenomenon.

But while everyone is totally obsessed with Elle's (kinda problematic) romance with Noah, we're a little more interested in a different partnership: Elle's friendship with Lee.

We actually love these two besties and everything they stand for. And while we think it's a little ridiculous that they have a strict set of guidelines governing their relationship, there are definitely quite a few truths hidden in their friendship rules.

Keep scrolling for a definitive ranking of the most iconic friendship rules from The Kissing Booth, based on how strictly they should be followed.

6. Rule #1: Only Your Best Friend Gets to Know Your Birthday Wishes

Rule #1 is probably the least divisive or important of all the friendship rules, which means it doesn't really need to be followed. Honestly, you're not supposed to share your birthday wishes with anyone or else they won't come true, but they're your birthday wishes, so technically you can share them with whomever you choose. If you want to limit that to your best friend, that's cool, but creating a whole rule about it seems a little excessive.

5. Rule #7: No Matter How Mad You Are at Your Best Friend, You Have to Forgive Them If They Give You Ice Cream

While we love the idea of getting an ice cream cone every time our BFF annoys us, it's just a fact that some things can't be fixed with a creamy, dairy-filled dessert. In fact, Lee proved that ice cream isn't always the answer when he refused to forgive Elle for going behind his back and dating his brother. It's a sweet thought in theory, but you shouldn't get to do anything you want and fix it by bringing your BFF ice cream. Your apology should depend on the severity of the mistake, and not just on the fact that your bestie loves dessert.

4. Rule #9: Relatives Of Your Best Friend Are Totally Off-Limits

Despite the way this panned out in the movie, we totally understand the logic behind this rule. No matter how close you are with someone, family always comes first. If you date someone in your BFF's family and it doesn't end well, it's bound to make things awkward between you and your bestie. It's a good and sensible rule to have, but we'll concede that you can't account for every situation. Sometimes, a "heart wants what it wants" approach is the only way to find lasting happiness. We think this rule should be followed the majority of the time, but there are definitely situations where breaking it isn't the worst thing in the world.

3. Rule #6: If You Can't Tell Your Best Friend About Something You're Doing, You Probably Shouldn't Be Doing It

We think this rule presents a super reasonable BFF expectation. Your best friend is supposed to be the one person in the world you can count on for everything. They know you better than anyone and they're the ultimate keeper of all your secrets, so if you're doing something that you can't share with your BFF, it's probably not the best decision. However, we also believe that the only way to really learn something is to do it for yourself, which means that sometimes it's okay to keep things from your BFF if you don't think they'll be understanding. In the ideal best friend relationship, you shouldn't have to hide things, but very few of us have an ideal BFF friendship.

2. Rule #2: Never Share Our Secrets With Anyone Else

The only thing we can really say about this rule is yes. Best friend secrets should never be shared. What's the point of even having a BFF if they're spreading your private information all over the place? You and your best friend might share other people's secrets with each other, but your own secrets have to stay sacred and untouchable. It's the hallmark of a good BFF relationship.

1. Rule #18: Always Be Happy For Your Bestie's Successes

And the winner for which friendship rule should be followed most strictly is rule #18: Always be happy for your bestie's successes. We love this friendship rule because it can sometimes be a little difficult to follow. Jealousy is a natural emotion, and there might be moments when you're envious of your BFF instead of rejoicing in their accomplishments. This rule pushes you to be a better friend by setting the expectation that you should always be happy for your BFF, no matter how the accomplishment might affect you personally. It's a beautiful idea, and should be strictly followed in every BFF relationship.
