How to Redecorate Your Bedroom to Invite in Happiness and Health

Your bedroom should be your safe haven and happy place. If it's not, we suggest you start thinking about redecorating ASAP.

You might think of the rooms in a home as neutral spaces, but there are actually plenty of small changes you can make that can enhance your happiness and health whenever you step into the space. Whether they make your room more comfortable, enhance your rest or help you feel more productive, they're all worth investigating. Below, we share some of our top tips.

Utilize the Power of the Sun With the Right Curtains

The sun is pretty powerful tool for maintaining a healthy circadian rhythm, or your body's daily rhythm of sleep and wakefulness. We recommend having the right curtains that can be moved aside to let in plenty of sunshine during the day, but that block out all light—natural and otherwise—while you rest. A healthy dose of exposure to natural sunlight in the morning will signal your mind and body to wake up. That same light can be super disruptive to your sleep at night, and black-out curtains can allow for a deeper, more restorative rest until you're ready to open the curtains back up in the morning.

Separate Your Work and Rest Space

Your bed is for sleep, and the more time you spend in it watching TV, scrolling through your phone or even doing work on your computer, the less you'll come to actually associate it with rest, making it harder to fall asleep each night. If at all possible, we recommend using a different room entirely for non-rest activities, but if your bedroom does need to be multipurpose, do what you can to create some division there.

Firstly, a desk is essential if you regularly do school or work assignments in your room. You can also utilize it for art projects, crafting or even binging your favorite show on a laptop. Next, you should create a comfy spot (that's not your bed) for casual activities like browsing social media or reading, whether that's a plush chair or just a beanbag on the floor. It may sound simple, but as soon as you start thinking of your bed as just a refuge for sleep, the better sleep you'll get.

Arrange Furniture With Movement in Mind

Decorating your room shouldn't be about cramming as much furniture in as possible or playing a game of Tetris to try to get everything to fit. All of the pieces in your room should be essential as well as functional, and most importantly, there should be a flow to your room. Don't create an environment where you have to dodge obstacles and step over things to get form point A to point B. If you find yourself stumbling over things, find a better place for them to give yourself one less thing to worry about.

Declutter

It's a cliché at this point, but a cluttered space really can make for a cluttered mind. Having a messy room can be subtly distracting and begin to take up mental space, getting in the way of proper rest, focus and everything in between. For quickly decluttering spaces, the right storage solutions can be a life-changing. It's all about having a place for everything, whether that's bins, boxes or buckets, with labels, if necessary. More aesthetically pleasing storage might be kept in plain sight, while other types can go into closets and under other furniture, where they're out of the way yet easily accessible when they're needed.

Do keep in mind, however, that different people have different ideas about what constitutes as clutter, and tidying up shouldn't come at the cost of personality in your room. Framed photos, souvenirs, memorabilia and knickknacks that bring you great joy can stay, as long as they have their own space and don't begin to overwhelm you.

Add a Cute Houseplant

There's a good reason people find houseplants so soothing. Not only is it nice to have a natural touch in a bedroom, but the colors are typically vibrant and energizing, and the fact they improve air quality is the icing on the cake. Certain plants, like snake plants, barely require any maintenance for those who don't have a green thumb. Fresh flowers can also be a stunning and sweet addition to any room. Just take care of them and don't keep them around once they start wilting, because that is not the energy you want to curate for your bedroom.

Try Aromatherapy

Scent, memory and emotions are highly connected, so filling your bedroom with the right scent can be just the thing for creating the right atmosphere. Add a diffuser or humidifier to your room so you can implement essential oils to get you in the correct mindset for the task at hand. For example, lavender and chamomile are usually used for encouraging relaxation and sleep, while livelier scents such as citrus and mint are used for focus and energy. Experiment to see what works best for you.  Candles can also be ideal for both creating ambiance and making your room smell incredible, as long as you keep a watchful eye on them.

Implement Soothing Colors

The right colors can make or break the vibe of a bedroom, and unfortunately, not everyone's favorite colors set the right tone for rest and relaxation. If you've filled your room with hues that are bold, bright and highly saturated, these colors may put a smile on your face but hinder your sleep, as well as concentration. We recommend soft tones and more muted colors in your room, at least in the spots you see easily at your desk or in your bed, to promote a calming feel.
