Saint Blonde’s Hunter Fitch on New Song ‘Prowl’ & Catching Feelings When You Least Expect Them

If you're not yet acquainted with indie-pop band Saint Blonde, it's time to to be obsessed—and their new single, "Prowl," is the perfect place to start.

The Texas quartet signed with Pale Chord/Rise Records earlier this year, and the moody new track encapsulates what they're all about with relatable lyricism, unforgettable vocals and a bold, groovy rhythm that instantly had us hooked. It's a song about when "casual" dating stops being so casual when you start developing strong feelings, and the euphoria, confusion and vulnerability that can ensure from there. We were enraptured from the first listen and had the pleasure of chatting with Saint Blonde vocalist and songwriter Hunter Fitch to learn more about the track and how it came to be.

The Story Behind 'Prowl'

Hunter Fitch: I wrote it at a time after a long hiatus from dating or feeling strong feelings, bein' crummy, working on myself—all those tropes—and then I felt some that I didn't really expect to. I think it's about that?

If we're talking technically or from a songwriting perspective: there's never really a plan with the content of the songs. Started with a cool bass riff and then I used that to write the melody and vocals to it.

Longform, if you care to include about our lyric and songwriting process: What I usually do is I have just notes and notes of ideas, concepts or lyrics that are either fully fleshed out or even just one single word kinda all dumped into one spot. When a new musical idea starts, I'll comb through this chaotic mess in my journals and notes app and find something that resonates with the music I'm writing to (it's on a loop at this point driving me nuts). Then I format it and rewrite whatever feels right from there so that its listenable and not a just a pile of streamed consciousness.

What 'Prowl' Means

HF: Strong feelings don't always come when you're ready for them. You owe it to yourself to feel them anyway. Maybe it will work out. Maybe it wont. That's okay too. That's what it's about for me.

Hunter's Favorite Lyric

HF: I'm sure we'll get questions about it because it's kinda weird and out of place, but my favorite line would probably be from the second verse:

"Fighting to critical, back to back in the Thunderdome with me."

Not sure how a funky '80s Mad Max movie reference made the cut, but it felt right to me.

I think what I mean with that is that sometimes when you are really into someone new and you're doing that whole bit where you're forecasting your potential future and life with them you imagine tackling all of the hard things together as a team. I don't know, something like that. Handlin' business as a unit kinda daydream.
