Sam Fischer on the ‘All-Consuming Love’ That Inspired His New Single, ‘Afterglow’

Again and again, Sam Fischer has reminded us why he's one of our favorite songwriters of today, and his latest single, "Afterglow," does not disappoint.

The Australian singer-songwriter's newest release feels like the most epic and uplifting of '80s power ballads, with a sound that makes us believe we can do anything. It's an anthem for self-love and clarity—just the thing for picking ourselves up when we're feeling down. Just this week, Sam also announced that he'll be releasing his debut album, I LOVE YOU, PLEASE DON'T HATE ME, on Dec. 1, and he was kind enough to provide the inside scoop on both the track and the album in the interview below.

The Story Behind 'Afterglow'

Sam Fischer: "Afterglow" is the moment when you find that radical, all-consuming love, whether that's for yourself or for someone else, but it makes you feel invincible and wholly understood and accepted. Honestly, the song started with what I wanted it to feel like. Before the concept had even taken shape, I just wanted a big stadium pop banger that Chris Martin would be proud of.

What 'Afterglow' Means

SF: As someone who's known for their more emotional, stripped-back songs, it's really nice to have a big production uptempo banger out in the world that's all about letting go of any BS and just living in the moment. I hope my fans love it and are imagining how hard it's going to go at the live shows!

Sam's Favorite Lyric

SF: "In a minute, all at once / Stop dead at the door I'm smiling like I caught up with god / and he told me not to worry at all."  It's the opening verse of the song, and I think it captures the entire sentiment in the song. Everything clicks, you're gonna be alright, let go. I love it.

What's Next

SF: So much. First and foremost, my debut album I LOVE YOU PLEASE DON'T HATE ME is coming out Dec. 1. I've been saying that for a while, but this time, it's really real and happening and I'm so damn proud of it. I can't wait for everyone to have it. I'm also going to be announcing shows, new merch and if you're lucky maybe one more collab before the end of the year—but you'll just have to wait and see!

Final Thoughts

SF: Look, it might be a late entry, but it's okay to admit that it really is the song of the summer.
