Sam Short Dishes on the Powerful Inspiration Behind Viral Debut Single, ‘Already Mine’

If you're on TikTok at all, chances are that you've heard Sam Short's stirring "Already Mine"—and that you know she's a star destined for some big things.

She dropped the teaser to the track in September of last year, which racked up more than 1.5 million views on its own before officially dropping at the start of this year. It only takes one listen of Sam's striking voice and the empowering message of self-love to understand why it's been streamed millions of times over. Sam also has a new single, "Naked," out today, and we got the chance to catch up with Sam to learn all about the track that put her on the map, its lyrics, and what "Already Mine" truly means.

The Story Behind 'Already Mine'

Sam Short: "Already Mine" was originally a song I wrote for pitch, actually. I wrote it completely alone in about 20 minutes. I knew the song was special because it literally poured out of me, but I had no idea it would resonate with so many other people. I wrote it about taking my power back post toxic relationship, and it turns out (for better or for worse), a lot of people could relate to that.

What 'Already Mine' Means

Sam: I think at the end of the day, it is an ode to self-empowerment. To me, the song is about being unapologetically and fiercely independent. I hope listeners feel that when listening.

Sam's Favorite Lyric

Sam: Honestly, the song's tag, "Baby, I'm already mine." I feel like, in so little words, it says so much.
