6 Signs You Might Be the Messy Roommate

We've all heard horror stories before about horrible roommates, most of which seem to feature the same type of character over and over again.

We're talking, of course, about the "messy roommate." They may appear in different forms, from the one who never takes out the trash to the one who constantly leaves cups around the apartment or dorm and the one who has so much stuff on their floor that they can't even shut their bedroom door. But while most of us are great at recognizing when someone else is the messy roommate, we may not always be so great at taking a step back and figuring out if that person might actually be, well, ourselves. So, whatever your reasons may be for wondering if maybe you actually are the messy one in your living situation, it's always good to be a little self-aware. And now you can figure out whether or not you might be the messy roommate by looking through the following signs:

1. There Are Always Dishes in the Sink, But Many of Them Are Yours

Wait a second—might that stack of plates piling up in the sink actually be yours? And don't forget about the many not-quite-empty mugs of coffee you've left around the place. If you're massively contributing to the sink clutter, you may be the problem.

2. Your Roommate's Space Looks 10 Times More Organized Than Yours

As in, their things are actually put away, and they don't use "the chair" to hold a massive pile of dirty-but-not-dirty-enough-to-wash clothes on it.

3. Your Roommate Has Started to Make Passive-Aggressive Comments

This is a pretty clear sign that something is up, especially if the comments relate to things being dirty or otherwise untidy around the shared spaces.

4. Any Common Areas and Shared Spaces Seem to Be Overtaken by Your Stuff

Whether it's the shower where someone couldn't possibly fit their own bottle of shampoo if they tried or the kitchen where your collection of pantry items, unnecessary small appliances and expired fridge items have taken over, this is never a good sign.

5. Your Friends Always Want to Meet Up at Their Places Instead of Yours

There could be other reasons for this, such as location or timing, but if friends are consistently avoiding meeting up at your place, then it might be a sign that there's an underlying reason why (a messy one).

6. You Can Never Find Anything You Need When You're in a Rush

Can't find your notebook right before you're supposed to leave for class? Or that one eyeshadow palette you need to create the perfect look before your date?  What about that one pair of pants that fits you better than the rest that you were planning on wearing on the day you knew you'd see your crush? If you're losing things—especially important things—all the time, it might be because your space is too messy to locate anything properly.
