Spencer Sutherland Seizes Every Aspect of Life With His Operatic Sophomore Album, The Drama
Today, Oct. 4, Spencer Sutherland dropped his epic and anthemic sophomore album, The Drama, with a sound and scope that live up to the theatricality promised in the title.
If you're already a fan of Spencer, you know that he simply doesn't hold back, and over the course of 14 tracks, The Drama unveils an unforgettable glam rock concept album. The three-act pop-rock opera tells a story of self-discovery as Spencer goes on a journey of finding his inner strength and resilience, ever propelled by his dreams and ambitions. From the effervescent glitz of the instrumentation to the raspy, soulful vocals, it transports us back in time with a modern twist in a way only the Spencer. We were hooked from the very first listen, and we had the pleasure of catching up with Spencer in the interview below to learn more about The Drama and his musical evolution thus far.
Sweety High: What does the album title The Drama mean to you? Why did that title track feel like the perfect summation of this group of songs?
Spencer Sutherland: The Drama felt perfect because it's my modern take on a rock opera. Drama meaning theatrical, and that's how I live my life! Treating your life like a movie means no wasted moments, good or bad, and I think it's a very valuable lesson because we are not here long enough to not! What's life without a little drama?

SH: What do you feel are the overarching themes of the album? What kind of feel do you hope fans take away from it?
SS: I'd say the overarching themes are living life as bold, loud and as yourself authentically. Having a great time in love and in life, and not apologizing for the messiness that is you. I hope fans take a zest for life, and a cheeky, fun attitude from this. I want to make them feel good!
SH: How would you describe the album's sound? Production-wise, how did you go about bringing these tracks to life via a dramatic pop-rock opera?
SS: The albums sound is glam-rock, regal guitar, soul vocal madness. It's big and gaudy in all the right places. Fabulous and bizarre sonically and message-wise. It's over-confident yet perfectly secure and humble. I didn't write a bunch of songs and then form an album, I made these specifically for the record.
SH: How do you feel that these songs represent where you all are in life right now?
SS: Perfectly. This rock opera album is the story of me, and so many other dreamers, lovers and jokers. As serious as this album is, it's equally as sarcastic and out there. Which I feel like describes my life right now. Making jokes about the saddest things in life.

SH: What is your favorite song on the album? Why?
SS: Can't choose, they're all my children. Also, I love "Drama" and "Modern Heartbreak"…
SH: How do you think you've evolved as an artist since In His Mania?
SS: I think I've only become more sure of myself, my brand and my message. The real way to have a "brand" is to not have a "brand," and then voila, there you are! I will forever be so proud of In His Mania, and couldn't ask for a better debut album. This is the next step and the next chapter of my journey. It's big and shiny and I think it's going to change my life.

SH: Is there anything else you'd like to add?
SS: I'd just like to add how thankful I am that I have a wonderful and supportive fanbase. I feel the love and passion every day, and I am just so lucky to have them in my life. I do it all for you!
