A-Idol K-Pop Group SUPERKIND Talk Profiles of the Future and Combining 2D and 3D Concepts

As the first-ever K-pop group to combine both human and AI members,  A-idol septet SUPERKIND is breaking new ground and paving the way for the future of the genre.

SUPERKIND consists of artists DAEMON, EUGENE, GEON, SiO and JDV, as well as virtual members SAEJIN and SEUNG, to create a group unlike anything we've seen before. With October's release of their new mini-album,  Profiles of the Future (Λ) : 70%, they made their first comeback featuring all seven members, combining 3D (real world) and 2D (AI) elements to create a unique sci-fi narrative befitting their unique make-up. The album features four new songs including the title track "Beam me up (2Dx3D)," pushing boundaries as it blends songs "Beam me up (3D) and "Speed (2D)," with lyrics in Korean and Japanese, acoustic and electronic sounds and, of course, featuring both human and AI members. We had the opportunity to speak with the boys of SUPERKIND to learn more about their story and the new release. Read the interview below for the full scoop.

Sweety High: Could you introduce yourselves and your roles without SUPERKIND?

DAEMON: Hello, I'm DAEMON, the leader of SUPERKIND.

EUGENE: Hello, I'm EUGENE, the sub-rapper and eldest member who is like the youngest in SUPERKIND.

SiO: Hello, I'm SiO, the main vocalist in SUPERKIND.

JDV: Hello, I'm JDV, the main dancer and the youngest in SUPERKIND.

SH: What does the name SUPERKIND mean to the group?

DAEMON: SUPERKIND is the first generation of A-idol and the seven-member group from South Korea that works with both AI and human members for the first time in the world. SUPERKIND has the meaning of "new humanity." It is made up of PRID members who are based on a 3D background, commonly referred to as the real world, and NUKE members who are active based in the 2D world. We are working with NUKE members, who are AI members, and expanding the spectrum of our album activity. We are trying to become a new humanity of the new dimension in K-pop.

SH: What does the mini-album name Profiles of the Future (Λ) : 70% mean?

SiO: To explain in more detail about the lambda (Λ) notation and "70%" in our album title, we are proceeding with the concept of a space trilogy, starting with "Beam me up." Among these, lambda is the cosmological constant, and 70% refers to the dark energy ratio. If I were to give you a spoiler, I would say that for the next album, we are preparing a 25% version and a 5% version as well!

SH: What do you feel are the overarching themes of the mini-album? What kind of journey do you hope to take listeners on with it?

EUGENE: We made a comeback with the new album, the first part of the Profiles of the Future trilogy. From now on, we will be greeting you with a three-part space concept. This title song, "Beam me up (2Dx3D)," is a mashup of the B-side tracks "Speed (2D)" and "Beam me up (3D)." Starting with this album, SUPERKIND's activities will involve going back and forth between dimensions (2D and 3D worlds). In order to convey the concept of "Dimensions Assemble," we plan to continue to compose albums that produce 2D and 3D songs, respectively.

SH: What was the inspiration behind the lead track "Beam me up (2Dx3D)"? How would you define a 2D song and a 3D song, and how did you bring them together for this track?

SiO: It is our interpretation of the animation Cowboy Bebop, which greatly inspired the 2D track "Speed," with a K-pop sound. To fully convey the atmosphere and texture of 2D animation, the song is sung in Japanese, which is a distinctive feature of this track. On the other hand, "Beam me up," a 3D track, draws inspiration from the movie Men in Black and is also reinterpreted with a K-pop sound. In contrast to the prominent analog band sound in "Speed," this song uses a digital and contemporary sound to intensify the atmosphere of science fiction.

DAEMON: The title song is a mashup of these two songs. If you watch the music video, the main theme is the chase between the 2D members who became space police and the 3D members who became wanted space criminals. It was a music video that exaggerated the acting and used various props as it had a humorous atmosphere. As I answered earlier, the reason for mixing these two songs is that in the future, SUPERKIND's activities will involve moving between dimensions (2D and 3D worlds), and in order to convey the concept of "Dimensions Assemble," we created a mashup of 2D and 3D songs. We tried to convey and represent our worldview through a mixture of songs.

SH: What does it mean to you to have your first comeback with all seven members of the group?

JDV: In fact, I think this "Beam me up" promotion is truly meaningful for both SUPERKIND and PLAYERS. Many PLAYERS have been eagerly waiting for full group activities with all seven members, and finally being able to showcase a complete stage is both exciting and, at the same time, there's a bit of worry about whether you'll enjoy it. I'm grateful that many of you are enjoying it. It's amazing that there are more activities that we can do as a whole group than before, not only music shows but also appearances on entertainment shows as a seven-member group, and I'm looking forward to more activities in the future!

SH: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

DAEMON: We are here with SUPERKIND's first physical album called Profiles of the Future. As this is our first album, we are very happy to be able to show PLAYERS our complete activities so far. I would like to show the expansion of SUPERKIND's stage in the future. Please look forward to SUPERKIND singing and dancing in various places and on various platforms!

EUGENE: We will be able to meet more PLAYERS both online and offline. We ask for your continued interest and love for SUPERKIND.

Sio: We just wrapped up our SUPERKIND! GO project, and we'll be visiting PLAYERS from all over the world soon starting with that project, so please keep showing us a lot of interest!

JDV: Thank you so much for loving "Beam me up"! Please continue to show interest and love for SUPERKIND!! Thank you.
