K-pop Artist SURAN Reveals the Meaning Behind Her Cozy New Song ‘Blanket’, Featuring Wonstein

K-pop singer-songwriter SURAN's new song "Blanket" is one of those beautiful, breezy tracks that's irresistible, even if you don't speak a word of Korean.

Featuring singer and rapper Wonstein, it's a cool and cozy ode to the daydreams we embrace when we're stuck inside and getting comfy under a blanket, with its sound perfectly matching the sentiment. For us, it was love at first listen, and we were lucky enough to get the chance to ask SURAN all about what this song means to her, and why the collab with Wonstein felt like it was meant to be from the very beginning.

Sweety High: What was the songwriting process behind "Blanket"?

SURAN: Because of COVID-19, I had to stay at home and I couldn't even go to the gym. During this time, I thought a lot about traveling, life and my dreams and that was the inspiration behind making "Blanket." I wrote the lyrics all at once using a conversational, speaking tone to say what I wanted to say. I think this gave the song a casual and cozy vibe. With that in mind, I thought Wonstein with his cozy, honest pop tone was perfect for this song and thankfully, he agreed to be on the song and I love the final sound.

SH: For our English-speaking audience, what is the song all about?

SURAN: It's about living out your dreams and fantasies even though we are stuck at home in our blankets. It is a song about celebrating staying at home but at the same time, it conveys all my wishes to go back to better times during this difficult reality. For example, while being stuck at home, I would imagine my home as a "stage" and sing and dance in front of my mirror. Similarly, I hope listeners can live out their imaginations boldly and freely even if we have to stay at home.

SH: Was it inspired by a real experience?

SURAN: Yes and I'm sure we all experienced similar thoughts and feelings in the past year.

SH: What do you think are all of the benefits of staying home, wrapping yourself up in a blanket and watching Netflix instead of going out to play?

SURAN: Saving your precious energy for the things that really matter in life!

SH: What was it like collaborating with Wonstein? What do you think he uniquely adds to the track?

SURAN: It was super great working with Wonstein! Even during the sketch of this song, I imagined and hoped Wonstein could be a part of it. His writing is really special, honest and charming while cleverly combining reality with fantasy.

SH: What's your favorite lyric from the song?

SURAN: "Counting sheep" and "just watching Netflix"

SH: Is there anything you'd like to add?

SURAN: I started my own independent label S-TASY this year and I have many exciting plans ahead. After "Sunny," I prepared "Blanket" in hopes of cheering everyone up during these difficult times. I hope you can feel freedom from this song and I hope everyone can look forward to and support my future releases and activities.
