Why the New 4-Girl Pop Group SZNS Has To Be on Your Radar

We're never happier than when we've just discovered an incredibly talented new girl group to obsess over, and that's just happened with the band SZNS.

The four-girl pop group, consisting of members Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter, have seriously wowed us with their viral songs "Tequila w Lime" and "Build a Boy," and we think their latest single, "We're Not Gonna Be Friends" is also destined for the big time. We love these gals, so we jumped at the opportunity to find out all about them. Check out the interview below.

Sweety High: How did SZNS form as a band? What do the four of you have in common that makes you work so well as a group?

Summer: It feels so funny to say we auditioned for the group because all of us are so close now. I think what makes us work so well as a group is how different we all are and each have different strengths we bring to the studio.

 

SH: Can you each tell us a little bit about yourselves? What's your musical background? What season represents you, and why?

Winter: I am from Indiana and have been singing and acting since I was a little girl. I wanted to move somewhere that I could pursue both, so Cali was always the goal. And Winter is honestly just my season cause I'm such a homebody. Love cozy blankets and long talks in the kitchen.

Summer: I started out by dancing and playing trumpet—I was always so shy when it came to singing. I literally couldn't sing in front of anyone, but always secretly dreamed of pursuing music.

Autumn: I was a big musical theater kid. My favorite show was always Jersey Boys, which is such foreshadowing that now I'm in SZNS. Autumn is so synonymous with change, with that transition from the lightheartedness of summertime to composure and severity and I think that also resembles my role in this group as the resident wet blanket. I also love Halloween, which is fitting.

Spring: I was born and raised in San Diego, California. I can't count how many times my passion and drive have been undermined and I've been told that all I'll ever be is a pretty face. SZNS has given me an opportunity to share my duality as a woman and has given me the platform to encourage other women to tap into their passion, drive and internal beauty as well, not just their outer beauty. To be a woman is to be versatile and I believe SZNS is proof of that.

 

SH: What artists are some of the biggest musical inspirations for the group?

Summer: We, of course, are inspired by other girl groups like Destiny's Child, BLACKPINK and the Spice Girls. But we're also super influenced by a lot of the music we listen to on our own!

 

SH: What was the inspiration behind the song "We're Not Gonna Be Friends"? What does the song mean to the group?

Autumn: I'd been playing around with the concept of reverse friend-zoning for a while, but I couldn't quite nail the sentiment in one line. One night I was bored watching The Wolf of Wall Street, and it's kind of messed up because this scene is about homewrecking, but Leo DiCaprio says, "A married man can't have friends?" and Margot Robbie says "We're not gonna be friends," and I paused it and I knew that that was the song.

Summer: This is my favorite song we've put out! It's about that initial attraction you have for someone when you just know there's no way you'll be just friends.

 

SH: Do you have any advice for when you're crushing hard on someone and you know you're not going to be able to be just friends with them?

Winter: Love is why we are all here! It comes and goes but for it to do either, you gotta speak your truth!

Summer: Shoot your shot! Life is short. You're better off being completely honest because who knows, maybe they feel the same way! And if they don't, I'm sure they'll be flattered!

Spring: Be bold. Say what you feel, you never know unless you try!

 

SH: Are there any upcoming projects or releases that you can tease for us?

Summer: We're super excited to keep sharing new music and content with everyone!

Winter: Absolutely! And we can't wait for the shows that are to come. We are going to be performing all over in 2022.
