Experiencing Teen Hair Loss? Here Are Common Causes—and How to Reverse It

While hair loss is usually associated with aging men, it's actually an issue that also affects a growing number of women and teens, and it's about time we started talking about it.

JoJo Siwa has recently opened up about her own hair loss due to stress when she was on Dance Moms, and it's a great step toward breaking the stigma and dispelling stereotypes, but we can definitely do more. That's why we spoke with Chiara, founder and creative director of I.C.O.N. and hair loss expert, to learn all about the causes of hair loss—and how understanding the hair phases can help us to reverse it.

Teen Girls and Hair Loss

Chiara: Hair loss was once an issue that was dominant in men, but now we are seeing it occur in women more and more. We lose hair for a variety of reasons, such as environmental changes, diet, hereditary factors, hormonal imbalances and, at times, even certain medications.

As young girls reach their teenage years and go through hormonal changes, they may experience hair loss. Poor nutrition or lack of proteins can also contribute to hair shedding and thinning. In the last couple of years, we have seen an abundance of hair loss cases due to COVID, and we have found that by following the right hair routine, hair can come back stronger, thicker and fuller.

The Hair Cycle Phases

Chiara: There are three hair cycle phases: anagen (the growing phase), catagen (the transition phase) and telogen (the resting phase).

Anagen

During the anagen (growing) phase, in order to keep the scalp clean, healthy and nourished, it is important to do a weekly detoxifying treatment on the scalp to remove bacteria and buildup and stimulate blood flow. Capixyl, a Lucas Meyer ingredient, is proven to induce a visible increase in the anagen hair density in comparison with placebo. When we formulated 5.25, our hair replenisher serum, we added 5% of Capixyl for intensive treatment to reduce hair loss and stimulate new hair growth. When applying a hair growth serum such as 5.25, it's important to be constant and apply at least once a day in order to keep the follicle healthy and nourished and get the maximum benefits.

Catagen

During the catagen (transition) phase, the hair follicle shrinks and hair growth slows. During this phase, which lasts around 10 days, apply India Oil directly on the scalp, massaging it through. India Oil is known for its fatty acids, which bring back hair vitality. This oil is essential for repair and to maintain the quality and strength of the hair. Shampoo and condition with Organic Shampoo and Conditioner, and follow with your daily routine of 5.25.

Telogen

For the telogen (resting) phase, continue with a weekly application of Shift and India Oil and daily application of 5.25.
