Our Favorite Black-Owned Products for Textured Hair

Growing up with textured hair in the early 2000s was a battle. Most products were created with fine, straight hair in mind or encouraged us to put heavy chemicals in our hair to make it "more manageable."

Fortunately, things have changed for the better. There are hundreds of brands on the market suitable for all hair textures by people like us who struggled in silence for years. Below, find six holy grail products in our hair routine from Black-owned brands.

PATTERN Beauty Satin Scrunchies for Natural Hair: $10

At this point, we all know that the everyday hair tie can cause tension and breakage. But sometimes, we can't fight the feeling of putting our hair into a high pony. Now, with the genius of Tracee Ellis Ross' PATTERN Beauty, we can keep our hair up guilt-free with a satin scrunchie. Besides being uber cute and discrete, this hair tie is one of the only ones that can fit our thick hair because it's XL size. No more snapping elastics in our attempts to create the perfect messy bun!

Design Essentials Peppermint & Aloe Soothing Scalp Tonic: $11

We've suffered from dry, flaky scalp for years. We've tried everything from the most popular brands to generic oils, but the one item that has truly saved us is this peppermint and aloe serum from Design Essentials. Its formula will detoxify and purify your scalp, meaning you can fight build-up and oils while hydrating. Our favorite way to use this is before shampooing so we can make sure our scalp is squeaky clean.

Mielle Organics Sea Moss Conditioner: $11.99

Whenever we find a product that uses ingredients from the sea (whether salt or, in this case, moss), we jump on it because—we can't lie—we love channeling our inner mermaid. Thankfully, this conditioner from Mielle Organics happens to be as high quality as it is aesthetically pleasing. It truly makes our hair feel deeply moisturized, and we love the silky smooth appearance it gives. It also smells great, which is always a plus.

Miss Jessie's Pillow Soft Curls Cream: $22

Whenever someone tells us they use Miss Jessie's curl creams, their curls look perfect. There are no flyaways, their hair looks, well, pillow soft, and the curls stay juicy all day.

We don't typically wear our hair with natural curls, but we began experimenting during the quarantine lockdown, and this was one of the only products that revitalized them. We also have heat-trained hair, so that's saying something.

Briogeo Farewell Frizz Heat Protectant Crème: $26

As we said, we don't typically wear our hair naturally, which means we use a lot of heated tools, so we need to keep a good heat protectant at hand. Previously, we tried sprays but realized they never did much to protect our hair. After switching over to a créme, we see a major difference when blowdrying. Goodbye fried, frizzy hair!

Bread Beauty Supply Pre-Wash Clay Mud Mask: $34

Your hair needs as much love as your skin. That's why we include a bi-weekly clay treatment in our routine. Like the skin of your face, you must also exfoliate your scalp, and yes, this mask does live up to its claims of increasing shine. This mask has five stars at Sephora and on their website for a reason.
