5 Great Starter Perfumes for Anyone New to Fragrance

When I was a new perfume user, I had no idea what qualities I liked in a fragrance. I didn't know if I could tolerate smelling myself all day. Or, I had concerns that I was unconsciously buying a foul scent that would pester everyone around me.

I've gone through many phases of perfume, but I confidently understand what I consider a timeless fragrance: fruity and floral scents! With that said, what works for me won't work for everyone, and body chemistry can make identical notes smell different on every skin.

It's all trial and error. To save you some time, I found five great beginner perfumes to help you learn more about your taste.

Clean Reserve Classic Warm Cotton: $44

The safest perfume you can buy is one that smells like clean laundry. Come on—who doesn't love the scent of fresh, warm clothes hot out of the dryer? Because it's such a familiar, comforting fragrance, Clean Reserve's Classic Warm Cotton is one of the best to acclimate you to wearing a perfume all day.

Ariana Grande Cloud Eau de Parfum: $45

It's a rite of passage for every girl to own at least one Ariana Grande perfume. I started with Ari when she first started releasing fragrances. But Cloud is easily her bestseller. It's a gourmand with sweet notes of vanilla and coconut and lasts for hours.

Bath & Body Works Butterfly Eau de Parfum: $49.95

Ah, Bath & Body Works. What a classic. I started my B&BW journey in elementary school. Body sprays are the perfect gateway into eau de parfums. Now, you don't have to leave their store to find something with intensity. Butterfly is one of their most delicious offerings—it has notes of raspberry nectar and vanilla to resemble "floral spring air."

Philosophy Fresh Cream Eau de Toilette: $54

Honestly, anything gourmand is going to last you a while. But rather than vanilla, Philosophy's Fresh Cream Spray combines heliotrope with tonka bean, whipped cream and sugar to culminate into a sweet, dreamy paradise. I envision soft, fluffy clouds and fuzzy blankets whenever I smell it. It's like a hug in a bottle.
