5 Country Songs That Will Change Your Opinion on the Genre

Country is the most polarizing genre. Sometimes, the topics can feel too far-fetched—especially if you're not used to hearing about tractors, farm life and a more traditional lifestyle. Thankfully, there is much more to the genre than what most people call "bro country."

If you've sworn off country music for years, you should consider expanding your taste with the more relatable and sonically pleasing tracks. Continue reading to discover a few of our most palatable favorites.

'16 CARRIAGES' by Beyoncé

We've been waiting for a complete country album from Queen Bey since she released "Daddy Lessons" on Lemonade in 2016. That time is finally here.

On Super Bowl Sunday, the musical icon released two singles from the second act of RENAISSANCE, "TEXAS HOLD 'EM" and "16 CARRIAGES." While we love both, the latter is our favorite—it's a slow ballad about the hardships of growing older. Beautifully written with even more beautiful vocals and classic country production.

'Butterflies' by Kacey Musgraves

There's a reason Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour was one of the few country records to win Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. It's that good. Kacey innovates new, prismatic sounds to country music that we've never heard while retaining that musical twang. Honestly, listen to the entire album because it's a masterpiece.

'The Bones' by Maren Morris

"The Bones" might be the most pop-leaning song from this list, but that doesn't invalidate its country roots or negate how addicting it is. Maren Morris traces the story of a rocky relationship that overcomes all its trouble over a hypnotic electric guitar. The Hozier remix adds even more soul and yearning between the two writers.

'I Bet You Think About Me (feat. Chris Stapleton)' by Taylor Swift

After 1989, we never thought Taylor Swift would return to country music. Technically, she still hasn't gone full country, but she gave us a taste by dropping "I Bet You Think About Me (feat. Chris Stapleton)" From the Vault. It's a cheeky song calling out her ex for his pretentious nature—and how he still will think about her, even though he put himself on a pedestal. It's one of our favorite songs from Taylor Swift's entire discography.

'Tennessee Whiskey' by Chris Stapleton

"Tennessee Whiskey" has been a beloved track in country music for years. Chris Stapleton covered it in 2015 and added a new life to the song. If you ask us, it's the most bluesy rendition of it. Chris' emotions almost feel tangible as he compares his lover to a smooth glass of liquor.
