The Cyclical Nature of Imposter Syndrome

If you claim you've never experienced imposter syndrome, we will need to see some receipts, because most of us have endured the carousel of self-doubt at least once.

It's like a never-ending whirlwind of uncertainty that pops up whenever we try something new or even when we're just minding our business. Strap in, because we're about to take a spin on the imposter syndrome merry-go-round. Hopefully, by the end, you feel empowered enough to take on anything life throws at you and start feeling like the main character of your own life.

Why Me?

You can usually see this syndrome pop up after you try something for the first time, end up succeeding, and then the self-doubt starts to set in. Once the high of the victory starts to wane, you find yourself feeling like a fraud. Instead of basking in the well-deserved success, you often wonder if you accidentally stumbled into someone else's victory party, asking yourself, "Why do I deserve this?"

Overcompensating

The insecurity that comes from this level of self-doubt leads to people trying to prove their worth. You go above and beyond, working overtime to not only prove to others but prove to yourself that you deserve the success you've received. If you've needed a sign to stop this cycle before it continues, here it is!

A Moment of Recognition

Amidst the chaos, the uninvited party crasher, imposter syndrome, who has overstayed its welcome, subsides for a moment, and you have a moment of, "Maybe I did deserve this?" Or you hear Rihanna's "B**** Better Have My Money" start to play in the gym, and you can't help but think, "I am that girl!"

The Cycle Starts Again

However, as life would have it, the cycle of imposter syndrome loves to repeat itself. Try your hardest to embrace self-acceptance and learn to laugh at your inner imposter. Surround yourself with supportive people who lift you up. Even the icon herself, Meryl Streep, has grappled with imposter syndrome. So, chin up, dear friend, and enjoy the rollercoaster, because you are certainly not alone.
