The Fault In Our Stars Tops The Box Office!
The Fault In Our Stars was #1 at the box office this weekend, proving that young adult stories aren't just for teens, and that young women are becoming a driving power in the box office!
The drama features up-and-coming stars Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as teens who fall in love as they face their own battles with cancer. It opened in theaters across the country on Friday and brought in $48.2 million.
The Fault In Our Stars easily beat out the Tom Cruise action-thriller Edge of Tomorrow, which was primed to be one of the biggest summer blockbusters of 2014! The film made just $19.1 million in comparison.
The Fault In Our Stars had a budget of only $12 million, compared to Edge of Tomorrow's massive $175 million budget, which seems to show that the box office is no longer dominated by the films that boys want to see.
Last week's box office winner was Maleficent, which told another tale of girl power. Maleficent stayed strong in the box office this week in second place, bringing in another $33.5 million!
But what's great about The Fault In Our Stars is it proves that a story doesn't have to be a sci-fi or fantasy tale to bring in young female audiences. Unlike The Hunger Games and Divergent, the new film is set not in a dystopian future, but here and now, relating to the real struggles of teenagers in love.
And according to Twentieth Century Fox, more than 80 percent of the audience of The Fault In Our Stars was female! We hope to see women continue to pave the way for these kinds of movies, and maybe get the studios to hire more female writers and directors as well!
