7 Unique Popcorn Flavors to Try on National Popcorn Day
The best thing about popcorn is how customizable it is. You might only know the usual butter popcorn or kettle corn. But it's no different than ice cream or a bag of chips. There are so many flavors that two people can say they like popcorn but only prefer opposite sides of the spectrum.
It's National Popcorn Day, so if you haven't already expanded your flavor database of the tasty snack, today is the perfect day to experiment. Ahead, we have seven unlikely (but surprisingly delicious) flavors of popcorn you should try.
Barbecue
Barbecue is one of the most popular flavors for chips. We're surprised we don't commonly hear about it in popcorn. After all, they're both salty treats. We had the chance to try Rob's Backstage Popcorn in Kelly's Classic Barbecue, and we thought it was delicious. It adds a smoky edge to popcorn, elevated by its buttery base. Check it out at Walmart for only $3.98.

Birthday Cake
Typically, we avoid sweet popcorn. However, we can never resist anything birthday cake or confetti-flavored, so when we heard it was available in popcorn form, we immediately bought it. You'd expect it to taste sweet and salty, but we found that it mostly leaned sweet. The vanilla paired well with the natural flavor of the popped corn. We recommend Pillsbury Funfetti Glaze or Poppy Hand-Crafted Popcorn in Birthday Confetti.
Hidden Valley Ranch
Hidden Valley Ranch is having a takeover. They came out a line of seasoned nuts. Then, they partnered with Van Leeuwen to create a ranch-flavored ice cream. Most recently, we saw Hidden Valley Ranch-seasoned popcorn arrive at AMC Theaters near us. Sadly, we can't find any bags online, but the brand does have a recipe on their website where you can recreate this tangy dish.
Matcha
We saw a matcha popcorn in Whole Foods, and our jaws dropped. Can we have everything matcha-flavored? It works with everything, and the popcorn was no exception. We tried the Lesser Evil brand—it was very light and fluffy. For a more intense flavor, you can try these recipes from Oh, How Civilized and The Simple Veganista.

Salted Egg
A brand called Tochi specializes in unconventional popcorn flavors, from Milk Tea to Black Sesame. Amongst their most fascinating is Salted Egg. According to their product description, it's sweet and creamy. Add saltiness to it, and you get a snack "bursting with umami." Consider us intrigued.
Soy Sauce
While thinking of flavors, a genius one came to our mind: soy sauce. You put soy sauce on rice. Since popcorn is either puffed kernels or rice, should it taste good, too? Luckily, we weren't the only ones with this idea. Kikkoman, the most popular soy sauce brand, has a recipe to make this concoction at home.
Taco
Like barbecue, you can find taco-flavored anything. So, why isn't taco popcorn more popular? We couldn't find a single brand that sold one with taco seasoning. However, Well Plated by Erin and Old El Paso themselves have come to the rescue for two quick and easy ways to make it from the comfort of your kitchen.
We tried confetti-flavored popcorn for the first time a few years ago. Read HERE to hear our in-depth review of it.
