7 Things That Don’t Matter After High School

In high school, everything feels important in one way or another.

From your perfectly curated outfit and making sure that your crush sees you in that outfit to the notes you take in class and everything in between, it's a lot of weight to carry on your shoulders when you're always striving for perfection. However, so much of what you're worrying about actually won't matter at all once you leave the halls of your high school and step across that graduation stage.

To make you feel a little bit better about everything you have going on right now, here's our condensed list of things that just don't matter after high school:

1. How Many Followers You Have

Unless you're an actual influencer, the number of followers you have and how often that count fluctuates just doesn't matter. As you get older, you'll care a lot less about this and a lot more about only following the people and accounts that matter most.

2. Whether or Not You've Had Your First Boyfriend or Girlfriend

Dating during high school feels like something that you "should" do (after all, we have a limitless number of movies and TV shows about the topic), but in reality, it really doesn't matter at all whether you do it or not. Frankly, most high school relationships don't last anyway, and you don't need the "experience" in dating to have healthy relationships down the line.

3. If You Had Perfect Attendance

Unless it's somehow the thing that gets you into your dream college, your flawless attendance record just won't matter after you graduate. While we aren't saying that you should start skipping all the time, you should allow yourself the ability to take a sick day when your body is crying out for it.

4. How You Dressed Every Day

If it brings you genuine joy to get dressed up every day and spend time picking out the perfect outfit, then by all means do so. But otherwise, just know that your style will still develop after high school and that you don't need to waste that effort planning an outfit that even you won't remember in the long run anyway.

5. If You Won Prom or Homecoming King or Queen

After high school, this status just isn't really the flex that it feels like now. Once you reach college or the "real world," this just becomes a small part of your story that doesn't make you any better or worse than anyone else.

6. If You Had a Date to Prom

Similarly, you absolutely don't need to stress about having the "perfect" prom experience if it just doesn't work out that way. If you don't have a date, don't get a promposal and even if you're outfit doesn't work as perfectly as you'd hoped, it's all okay. In the end, high school really won't mean as much as it does right now.

7. How Big Your Friend Group Is

Realistically, you'll probably end up growing apart from many of your high school friends once you graduate—but that's perfectly okay. People grow and change as they go through life, especially once this period of time is over. So whether you have a small circle of friends or a huge one, that won't really matter once you've left your school behind.
