Judah, Maya and Cinya of Tiny Habits Share the Story Behind Debut Album, All For Something

After making a name for themselves on TikTok with viral dorm covers, harmony trio Tiny Habits released their eagerly anticipated debut album, All For Something, last week, and we haven't taken it off repeat since.

The group consists of Judah Mayowa, Maya Rae and Cinya Khan, who wrote the album over the course of two years as students at Berklee College of Music, where they met. Channeling an equal dose of '70s folk sounds and contemporary pop, the album features the trio's signature brain-tingling harmonies, with realness and relatability at the core of each track. In addition to tackling everything from relationships to the journey of life, it's also a reflection of the incredible friendship the three forged together over that time. We had the pleasure of speaking with the group to learn more about them and how they brought the album to life. Read the full interview below.

Sweety High: Can you each introduce yourselves and your roles within the group?

Judah Mayowa: Hi! I'm Judah. I sing, co-write and arrange for the group.

Cinya Khan: Hi. I'm Cinya!!I sing, co-write, arrange and play guitar for the group!

Maya Rae: Hey! I'm Maya! I also sing, co-write and arrange for the group!

SH: What's the story behind the formation of Tiny Habits? Why do you feel the three of you work together so well as humans and artists?

Maya: We met at Berklee College of Music four years ago, during the pandemic. Cin had posted something on her Instagram story about not knowing how to use the toilet paper roll handles in our dorm bathrooms. So I swiped up on her story because my roomates and I also didn't know how to use it! Our friendship blossomed from there and she came over that night to sing with me in my dorm room! Judah was also over that night and the rest of history!

SH: What does the name Tiny Habits mean to the three of you?

Judah: At first, it didn't really have a meaning to me, but now, when I think of the name Tiny Habits, I think about friendship and the small things that make up my relationship with Maya and Cinya.

SH: Why did you decide to title the album All For Something? Why is that phrase meaningful to the album?

Cinya: We were sending titles back and forth, digging through lyrics trying to find something that made sense. Eventually, we remembered a lyric from one of our favorite songs on the album, "Wishes." The last line is, "I wish these wishes weren't all for nothing." We wanted to flip it around and say it was actually… All For Something. A lot of the songs on the record detail heartbreak and rebuilding or loss and hope. All For Something felt like it wrapped the themes of the album in a sweet bow.

SH: What do you feel are the overarching themes of the album? What kind of feel do you hope fans take away from it?

Judah: A lot of the songs center around the ups and downs of a relationship. I hope that people listen to the music and feel seen in their experiences. Although each individual life journey is different, we are all still dealing with similar situations and hardships. I think it's important for people to never feel alone.

SH: How would you describe the album's sound? Production-wise, how did you go about bringing these tracks to life?

Maya: The album is definitely very cozy, while still exploring unique and interesting sounds throughout. Tony [Berg] and Will [Maclellan] really helped us bring all of these songs to life. They are just complete experts and to be able to work with them, and all of the musicians on this record, was an absolute blessing. We're very proud with how our first album turned out!
