Why I Think Lara Jean Should’ve Broken Up With Peter in To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You
First things first: I'm a pretty avid reader, so when I first heard about the To All the Boys… series about five years ago, I bought the books and consumed them within a few days.
Is it unhealthy to get so caught up in characters' lives, that I think they're my friends? Probably. But am I going to stop any time soon? Definitely not. I'm getting off track… You see, when I read the series, I was team LJ and Peter all the way. Jenny Han is one of my favorite authors, and I just love how she portrayed their love in her writing. However, when I watched the second installment of the movie series on Netflix, my opinion on Peter slowly started to change.
I'm not sure if it was just seeing it acted out in front of me, but for some reason, I began to despise Peter. Perhaps it's just because I've gotten older and don't forgive so easily, but regardless of the reason, I was seriously not into the way Peter was treating Lara Jean throughout the film. Not only was a total bomb dropped on us that Peter was actually waiting for Gen in the hot tub (remember that scene in the first movie?), but he lied about it for months.
Speaking of Gen, I have no sympathy for her. I know, I know, I'm a horrible person with a dark, dying heart. But she manipulates Peter in a way that only a first love can get away with! She manages to keep him under her spell while he's dating LJ. He's constantly in talks with her, texting her and meeting her at her house. It's just bizarre to me that he would do that for an ex while he's dating someone. Keep reading for my breakdown on the reasons why I think Lara Jean should have called it quits with Peter:
1. The Hot Tub Debacle
The first reason I think Lara Jean should have broken up with sir Peter Kavinsky at the end of TATB2 is obviously the whole hot tub dispute. Arguably everyone's favorite scene from the first movie was the hot tub scene, so I can't be the only one who isn't a big fan of Peter anymore. The cute and steamy moment between him and LJ was completely ruined by the fact that he was meant to be kissing Gen. In that instance, I do feel sorry for her, but only because she had to see him kissing LJ.
2. He Always Takes the Last Slice
I know, this may sound like a super petty reason, but the fact that Peter takes the last slice of pizza (on multiple occasions, I might add) when he's with a group of people, is just plain rude. Is it just me, or isn't there some unspoken rule to always leave the last piece? Whether it's bread, pizza or something else…I would never just reach and grab for it. If you're truly hungry, at least make sure it's cool if you take it, first!
3. He Didn't Fight Hard Enough for Lara Jean
When they initially called things quits, he didn't seem to be affected by the drama of it all. If he really, truly, loved LJ, he should have been on his knees begging for forgiveness. Instead, he kept his head high to look cool in front of his friends and left her in the dust. The perfect opportunity for him to win LJ back would have been at the aquarium. But, instead, he took the necklace back and that was that. My heart was truly breaking for LJ at that point.
