All the Best Foods and Drinks We Tried in April 2023

With April behind us, it's feeling more and more like summer each and every day—and the latest food trends are feeling pretty festive, too.

Last month, we tried all kinds of delightful new drinks for energy in the morning, rest at night and everything in between, plus cool desserts, salty snacks and nutrient-packed bars to get us through all of our adventures, indoors and out. Curious about what we loved most? Just keep scrolling, and you'll discover your next foodie favorites.

JOYÀ

Here at Sweety High, we firmly believe in the power of adaptogens, which has made JOYÀ and its innovative Superblends fast favorites. The brand's newest product is the DEFEND Superblend, doing everything from supporting health and immunity to enhancing cell health and increasing resistance to stress with a blend of ashwagandha, reishi, lion's mane and maca. Best of all, though, its vanilla-maca flavored powder has just the right amount of creamy sweetness, making it equally tasty in your morning coffee or blended into a smoothie.

Moon Juice

Over the last few years, we've discovered just how important magnesium is to our sleep and overall sense of relaxation, and Moon Juice's Blue Lemon Calm Magnesi-Om is our new favorite way to take this crucial mineral. Just a teaspoon turns water a beautiful shade of blue while adding a hint of luscious lemon flavor, and its combination of bioavailable magnesium and L-theanine put us in a restful mood in just minutes. Whether we need to chill throughout the day or require a little help getting sleepy before bed, this stuff always does the trick.

Beanitos

We're long-time fans of Beanitos and their bean-based tortilla chips and crunchy puffs, and with their new-and-improved recipes, we truly can't stop snacking. All of their products are free of gluten, corn, nuts and eggs, with the Sea Salt and Lime chip flavors making the perfect vehicle for salsa, and their Nacho flavor being just the thing for cheesy snacking any time of day.

SOMOS

SOMOS specializes in making authentic Mexican food accessible and easy to enjoy, and while we really enjoy their "Unusually Thick & Crunchy Tortilla Chips" paired with their especially spicy Cuatro Chiles Taquería Salsa, we have to say that the brand's new Mexican Street Corn White Rice takes everything to the next level. This authentic Mexican favorite combines white rice with fire-roasted yellow corn and a hint of Mexican spices, including epazote and chile de arbol, to create the perfect base for your favorite burrito bowl. We topped ours with carnitas, fajita veggies, salsa and sour cream, and the memory has our mouths watering. Plus, just in time for Cinco de Mayo, the brand is offering 20% off everything sitewide through May 8—so get shopping!

Brisk

Brisk's iced teas are a staple by this point, and their new Blood Orange flavor may be our favorite drink in the entire lineup. It combines bold, citrusy blood orange flavor with green tea to create a vibrant, fruit punch-like drink with just a bit of caffeine, delighting the tastebuds as it energizes.

Primary Beans

We can't say that we prep our own beans all that often, so we didn't know exactly what to expect when we tried two varities of specially bred beans from Primary Beans, but we think that even skeptics will be able to enjoy their flavorful and innovative offerings. Their Southwest Gold beans are a brand-new breed, with a uniquely nutty, earthy flavor that's the ultimate complement to meaty tacos, drenched in green sauce. We also tried their Chaparro black beans from Mexico, which have replaced the pinto as our favorite base for authentic and flavorful refried beans.primary beans chaparro and southwest gold beans

DAH! Lassi

We've only ever had mango lassi as a refreshing drink when we go out to Indian food restaurants, so it's kind of blowing our minds that the creamy, fruity beverage has become so accessible with DAH! Lassi. We're also a bit embarrassed to admit we like this slightly thicker, less tart version a bit more than what we've tried in the past. Not only is their mango lassi made with real Alphonso mangoes, but it has active cultures and 15 billion probiotics per serving, creating a luscious smoothie that's great for sipping anytime, while also making our tummies happy.

Enlightened

We're not quite sure how Enlighted makes such decadent frozen treats with hardly any sugar, but they haven't failed us yet, and their new Frozen Greek Yogurt Bars in Caramel Brownie and Mint & Cookies flavors are next-level. At first, we were a little worried they'd have too much Greek yogurt tang, but these creamy bars actually get the balance just right, with just enough sweetness and enhanced by great flavor choices (complete with cookie pieces). They're also packed with both prebiotics and probiotics, which is like an extra cherry on top.

LOVO

LOVO's plant-based "milk" chocolates are made using Swiss chocolate-making techniques, so they're just as rich, creamy and dreamy as dairy-based chocolates, but with absolutely zero animal products involved. They're available in four varieties—Almond Milk, Hazelnut Milk, Oat Milk and Coconut Milk chocolate—all of which have a luscious, classic texture, and flavors that are actually enhanced by the plant milks within. Our favorite has to be the hazelnut, perfect for all of the Nutella lovers out there, but you truly can't go wrong with any choice.lovo plant-based chocolate

Leaves of Leisure

If you love sipping on cozy, delicious teas, but can't handle caffeine, Leaves of Leisure was made just for you. They're focused on using the highest quality herbal tea blends and botanicals to create a mindful and relaxing tea-drinking experience, with zero edge and thoughtfully cute packaging. We're super fond of the Sun Soaked Tea flavor, which blends real chunks of apple with hibiscus, rosehip, rosemary and green mate leaves for just a hint of energy, without the crash afterward.

UP TO GOOD Energy

If you're looking to sip on something that can perk you up while also doing its part for the environment, UP TO GOOD Energy will be right up your alley. These energy drinks are made with upcycled coffee fruit, also known as cascara, which is usually discarded during the coffee-harvesting process. The result is a batch of uniquely flavorful sparkling drinks buzzing with 70 mg of natural energy per can. That's about the same caffeine as a cup of coffee, but balanced with organic extracts for focus, rather than jitters and burnout. They come in Cascara Mint, Lemon Ginger and Hibiscus Berry varieties, all of which boast herbal, floral flavors that are easy to adore, and they're also naturally low in calories with just five grams of natural fruit sugar in each can.

Blue Bear

And for those looking to wind down, there are Blue Bear's incredibly innovative ready-to-drink teas for relaxation. The Sleep Tea has a lusciously peachy flavor and contains melatonin, which helps the body enter a restful sleep, while the Functional Relax tea has a delicate berry flavor to help calm the body and mind. Both are caffeine-free with absolutely no sugar, and with a blend of ashwagandha, lemon balm, white tea, chamomile, lavender, passionflower, L-theanine and GABA, they bring on a relaxing, soothing sensation in no time flat. For insomniacs, we can't recommend the Sleep Tea enough.

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups

Reese's Peanut Butter Cups is making the creamy vs. crunchy peanut butter debate even fierier by adding Reese's Creamy Peanut Butter Cups and Reese's Crunchy Peanut Butter Cups to the fray, and of course, we had to try them both to see which cup wins. For us, it's hands-down the Crunchy variety, with its salty, crunchy texture that makes every bite more satisfying. We'd say it's even superior to the classic Reese's Cups. We found the Creamy style slightly underwhelming—but tastes will definitely vary.

Fringe

On the hunt for a protein bar that'll also make you feel your best? We highly recommend Fringe and their gluten-free, plant-based bars, powered by the magic of mushrooms and adaptogens. They come in filling and delicious Chocolate Almond Butter, Mango Hemp and Coconut Cashew flavors, with each bar containing lion's mane, cordyceps, reishi and turkey tail, plus ashwagandha, to get your body and mind in tip-top shape. Fringe bars contain no added sugar, getting their delightfully sweet flavor from the natural sugar of dates, and with 15 grams of protein and at least four grams of fiber per bar, they're fantastic fuel any time of day. They're even partnered with 1% For the Planet, so 1% of their annual revenue is donated to environmental non-profits.

Utz

Utz is more of an east coast brand, so as Pacific coast-dwellers, we don't have a lot of experience with them, but their new Mike's Hot Honey flavor has made us instant fans. The famous hot honey brand gives these thin, crispy chips the perfect balance of salty sweetness and building heat. At first, they don't seem too spicy, but the longer you snack, the fierier they get! We also love pairing them with a cooling dip for a blend of creamy and punchy flavors.

Sundays

If you love Oreos, but not that they're basically pure sugar, Sundays are here to save the day. They're a zero-sugar version of the classic chocolate and cream sandwich cookies, sweetened with allulose and monk fruit to be a healthy take on an old favorite. They're also made with gluten-free ingredients, with seven grams of protein in each and every serving, but the best part is that they have none of the weird, lingering aftertaste of other sugar-free cookies—and they're just as scrumptious dipped in milk as your favorite childhood cookie memories.

Bloom Nutrition is the talk of the town on TikTok, so we just had to try their new protein bars, and we can see what everyone's so excited about. These bars utilize Bloom's signature Whey Isolate Protein, giving each delicious 200-calorie, low-sugar bar a whopping 15 grams of protein while tasting like a sweet and tempting dessert. They're available in Blueberry Crumble, Raspberry Cheesecake, Peanut Butter Chocolate and Cookies & Cream flavors, with just the right chewy texture to satisfy while we repair our bodies.

Jolly Rancher

Jolly Rancher Gummies manage to take the iconically strong fruit flavors of classic Jolly Ranchers and recreate them in a much more satisfying gummy form, and we have to see these candies are dangerous. Once you open a bag, it's tough not to polish off all of the colorful and fruity green apple, blue raspberry, cherry, grape and watermelon gummies in a single sitting! Starting this month, the gummies are also featuring striking designs from street artists Danielle Mastrion, Joe Starkweather and Kid Wiseman on their limited-edition packaging, making them more irresistible than ever.

Omsom

We know Omsom for their delicious chef-quality sauces and seasonings, making it effortless to craft your own authentic Asian meals in a fraction of the time, but if you're like us and prefer your tasty meals even easier, prepare to be obsessed with their new product line of Saucy Noodles. In just six minutes in the microwave with water, the dry noodles hydrate into thick and ribbony noodles with a wonderfully chewy texture, beautifully complemented by the ready-made sauce packets that come in the kits. The Soy Garlic, Coconut Lemongrass Curry, Garlic Black Pepper and Chili Sesame flavors were all inspired by classic Asian dishes and clearly crafted with love, and it's incredible how close to restaurant quality you can get in the form of these instant noodles.

So Delicious Dairy Free

So Delicious Dairy Free has been in the dairy-free product industry for decades now, so we actually were surprised to hear that they didn't already have offerings in the oat milk category. It goes without saying that they've knocked their first effort out of the park. Oat milk is easily our favorite plant-based milk for adding a creamy smoothness to coffees and teas, and the So Delicious Organic Oatmilk in both Original and Extra Creamy varieties is the perfect enhancement for those beverages, hot or cold, without any unwanted aftertaste or nuttiness you might get from other options.

Moshi

For years, we've adored the East Asian citrus fruit called yuzu for its bright, aromatic flavor, and Moshi's yuzu sparkling drinks may be the most tantalizing way we've enjoyed it yet. All of the yuzu used in these drinks is directly sourced from the Kochi Prefecture in Japan, and they have just the right amount of fizz. While the sweetened varieties beautifully balance the tartness of the yuzu with real cane sugar, the unsweetened flavor is fantastically crisp and sour. Our favorite, though, has to be the Yuzu White Peach, which may be the yummiest fruity flavor combination that's ever passed our lips.

FULwater

Spirulina is a pretty buzzy ingredient these days—and not just because of its fabulous blue-green color. On the one hand, it's incredible for the environment, since spirulina is great at soaking up CO2 and turning it into the oxygen and nitrogen we breathe. On the other, it's fully packed with essential antioxidants and vitamins, which is why it's the key ingredient in FULwater's new sparkling spirulina drinks. Each can packs plenty of calcium, iron and vitamin C, and just 35 calories, while coming in the scrumptious flavors of White Peach, Pink Grapefruit & Cucumber and Lemon & Ginger. Our favorite thing, though, is that it doesn't taste like algae, so you can sip to your heart's content.

ROAR Organic

When we're looking for ultra refreshing hydration, packed with electrolytes, vitamins and antioxidants, ROAR Organic never lets us down—especially the tasty new Strawberry Lemonade flavor. It's crisp, lightly sweetened and just a little bit tart, making it a tasty thirst quencher while containing 100% of your daily vitamins B5, B6, B12 and C and plenty of natural electrolytes from coconut water. Unlike many other electrolyte drinks, it also contains just three grams of sugar or less in every bottle. It also comes in Mango Clementine, Cucumber Watermelon, Georgia Peach and Blueberry Açaí flavors, as well as new immunity-boosting powder formulations you can take with you anywhere.
