The Trending TikTok Terms You Need to Know in 2023

In a year like 2023, TikTok brings us tons of trends that range from what we wear to how we do our hair—not to mention what we say.

After all, have you ever stopped to think how many words and phrases you use that came straight from your For You Page? We'd guess it's probably quite a few. But if you've missed a few or simply want to touch up your vocabulary of TikTok terminology, it's time to check out our list of the trending TikTok terms you need to know in 2023.

1. 'GRWM'

While "get ready with me" videos have been around for a bit now, they've become so popular in 2023 thanks to influencers like Alix Earle and others that we've officially had to shorten the title to "GRWM." These days, these videos are a lot less about the actual process of getting ready, and a lot more about telling a story that helps the poster relate to the audience in one way or another.

2. 'Rizz'

Short for "charisma," "rizz" has really taken the realm of TikTok by storm in 2023 to the point where even teachers are posting about their students using it within the classroom. It's often used when discussing dating, as some people just have more rizz than others and can seem immediately more attractive because of it.

3. 'Touch Grass'

More of a phrase than a term, but "touch grass" is something used widely on TikTok that comes from a description of the boost in happiness that comes from, well, literally touching grass. Often called "grounding" by some, the practice of getting out into nature and sinking your feet into the ground can be super beneficial for your mental health, so we love the way that this phrase is used (lightly jokingly) to talk about when a moment of touching grass is needed.

4. 'Nepo Baby'

Nepo babies are nothing new, and neither is the term (which describes the children or relatives of famous people who get famous thanks to the power of nepotism). However, "nepo baby" has really risen to another level in 2023 thanks to the way that celebs like Hailey Bieber have begun to reclaim their nepo baby status instead of letting other people use it to shame them.

5. 'MFW'

This one is simply an acronym for "my face when," making it a popular choice for reaction videos and short but funny clips that describe moments of relatability.

6. 'Girl Dinner'

Girl dinner became popular in the second half of 2023 after girls all over TikTok began posting about the "weird" mix of foods they would typically eat for dinner when left to prepare the meal for themselves (which probably involves some mix of real food and random snacks, none of which pair well together traditionally). It's a wholesome one that really bonded women everywhere, and we plan on keeping it around for the fun of how it's used as a term today.

7. 'Girl Math'

And finally, our newest favorite addition to the top TikTok trending terms of 2023 is "girl math." This spinoff of girl dinner came about when women started describing how the math of spending money works in our heads—for example, returning a $30 shirt to ZARA and buying a new $37 top in the same trip means that you actually only spent $7, so the new shirt was basically free. Sound familiar? Yep, you probably do a bit of girl math in your head, too (by the way, "boy math" is now starting to take over as a term, too, so you may start to see more content with that on your accounts as well).
