Upside-Down Christmas Trees Are This Year’s Whimsical Holiday Trend
This year, the world is taking a cue from the Stranger Things cast and heading into the world of the upside down-and they're taking their Christmas trees with them.
Apparently normal Christmas trees are just a little too mainstream for 2017. This year, it's all about upside-down Christmas trees. It's definitely turning our Christmas tree expectations on their head.
It's a little unclear how this new trend came about. According to The Spruce, hanging Christmas trees upside down is not nearly as new as it seems. In fact, the custom dates back to the Middle Ages.
The resurgence of this age-old tradition, however, could potentially be attributed to the Westfield Shopping Centre in San Francisco. Last year, the mall chose a different approach to holiday decorating by hanging a huge crystal-covered tree from their dome-shaped ceiling. The tree created such a buzz that copycats have appeared all over the world.
Some people argue that the upside-down tree opens up more floor space for presents or other holiday decorations. Others say that the ornaments are displayed more beautifully on an upside-down tree because they are not caught in the bushy branches of a traditional tree. Whatever the reason, the inverted Christmas tree is a huge hit.
In fact, people love these new trees so much that they've been brought to the public by popular demand. You can now find various shapes and sizes of artificial upside-down trees in many retailers, including Target and Bed Bath & Beyond.
Whether you love it or hate it, there's no denying that this new trend adds a fun twist on a classic Christmas tradition.
While we might not put one in our own home, we certainly hope there will be a few out and about. After all, we have been searching for an Instagram-worthy Christmas tree pic.
