We Were Liars By E. Lockhart Simply Can’t Be Put Down!
We Were Liars is the thrilling new mystery novel by E. Lockhart that will leave you tearing through the pages!
"We are Sinclairs
No one is needy
No one is wrong.
We live, at least in the summertime, on a private island off the coast of Massachusetts.
Perhaps that is all you need to know."
Harris and Tipper Sinclair are a wealthy couple with their own private island. On it, they've built three beautiful houses for their daughters. Cadence is one of their granddaughters, and has visited the island every summer for as long as she can remember. Along with her cousins Mirren and Johnny, plus Johnny's Indian friend Gat, Cadence spends the days of her summers joyously lounging on the beach or on a boat with her grandfather.
But the summer of Cadence's fifteenth year, she has a terrible accident that leaves her injured and alone on the beach with no memory of what happened to her. The entire summer is erased, leaving Cadence with only vague memories of her cousins and the passionate romance she sparked up with Gat, looked upon with disgrace by her grandfather, who frowned on her fraternizing with a boy of a different color.
"If you want to live where people are not afraid of mice, you must give up living in palaces."
Cadence's accident leaves her depressed and afflicted by terrible headaches that leave her bedridden for days at a time. In order to help her heal, Cadence's mother keeps her from returning to the island the following summer. Cadence spends the year writing emails to Mirren and Johnny, only to hear nothing in response. What hurts the most is the silence from Gat, who seems to have forgotten her completely.
When Cadence returns to the island for the first time since her accident, her grandmother has passed and her grandfather has rebuilt the mansion into something unrecognizable. Fed up with people walking on eggshells around her, Cadence is determined to find out what happened the that fateful summer, how she got hurt, and why Gat continues to avoid the subject at all costs.
"I suffer migraines. I do not suffer fools."
We Were Liars is a book you will attempt to put down, only to pick it right back up swearing to read just one more chapter. The mystery is beautifully crafted to trap its readers in a tight hold that only lets go for a finale that will take your breath away. The Sinclair family is intriguing with their brutal secrets, posh life, and constant need to look perfect, no matter the consequences.
Cadence is leagues ahead of her spoiled, selfish family. She spends her free time reading and discussing books and expanding her horizons. Her voice is perfect for telling the story, and the writing style is unique. Cadence breaks off into short fairy tales that relate to her life as she discovers more about what happened to her during that dreadful summer. It's a refreshing twist on an already engaging story.
