Beauty Guru Wengie Shares Her Fav Products and Vlogging Tips
Wengie is an Australian beauty guru best known for her blog and the popular YouTube channel, The Wonderful World Of Wengie. In a recent interview, we asked her how she got into the business and got her to reveal some of the things you never knew about Wengie!
What's the one makeup product you can't live without?
It would have to be a cushion foundation. My skin gets so dry. Right now I'm specifically loving the IOPE cushion cover foundation because it lets your skin glow but is so moisturizing and has great coverage. It's on my June Favourites video.
If someone reached into your purse right now, what's the weirdest thing they'd find?
If I had to be honest, it would most likely be food crumbs of some sort.
Describe your favorite pair of shoes.
Would have to be a super comfortable pair of platform booties. Length and comfort for a shorty like me are a must.
What's your favorite style trend right now?
I'm loving the minimalist and simple look – Monochromatic color palettes and clean but soft lines.
What's your favorite guilty pleasure movie?
I have watched Clueless over 100 times so that must be my guilty pleasure.
What's your spirit animal?
A unicorn. Yes, they exist.
Which female icon is your biggest inspiration?
That's a tough ask because I find so many people that inspire me every single day, including my subscribers. If I had to pick one though, I would have to say Jessica Alba. I love how seriously she has taken her role as a mother. She seems so down to earth and I also love what she's done with The Honest Company. It's really great to see someone that was considered the hottest thing in entertainment not let it get to her head and see her loving her role as a mother, wife and businesswoman. She's definitely a huge inspiration to me.
What's your weirdest habit?
Turning everything into a musical. Yes, I communicate in song most of the time when I'm off-camera.
If calories didn't exist, what dream meal would you eat right this minute?
I love carbs so probably a huge plate of Chinese fried noodles! I'm craving them at the moment.
Have you always been so passionate about makeup and beauty? What made you decide to blog on the subject?
I loved makeup and beauty! I used to be so obsessed with makeup I spent a large portion of my income hauling limited edition products from MAC (back in the day when MAC was really the only decent choice). I have always blogged throughout my life, whether it was a personal diary I kept in primary school or a personal online blog when Xanga was the "it" thing. That was a very long time ago.
I also enjoyed making websites back when dial-up internet was all we had. So blogging was just a natural progression. I loved how you could create pieces that were both beautiful and useful for others and it was easy to just do it from home.
When did you start making YouTube videos.
YouTube videos came about when I started doing makeup tutorials on my blog at the request of paid brand campaign. I realized it took 8-12 hours to create a step-by-step makeup post and that it was probably better to do in video. That's when I decided to launch my channel, The Wonderful World of Wengie.
How did you come up with the name Wengie? Has your feeling about the name changed over time? If you could go back, would you change it?
Wengie is actually a version of my Chinese name, which is Wen Jie. I changed the J to a G because it was easier to pronounce and also I used to dance so we would make jokes that "G" stands for gangster and yes, I thought I was pretty "G". It became the name I used when I was teaching my dance classes, since there were 2 Wendys in the studio I taught at. It just became a name that stuck. If I could go back I might change it to something more beauty-like, but I wouldn't even know what I would change it to, so I guess Wengie will have to do. I guess it may not be as "marketable" as a brand, but it's something personal to me so I love it for that reason.
What's the biggest lesson you've learned through your time blogging and vlogging?
You are probably your biggest obstacle. Self-discipline is a huge thing when you're growing your own blog and channel, both in keeping to time commitments when there is no one waving a deadline at you and also staying true to yourself when everyone on the internet feels like they have some advice or feedback for you. You just have to be you and make sure you keep yourself grounded and accountable no matter what happens, from being a nobody to being someone everybody wants a piece of. You just can't let those things affect you or you'll lose your way.
What advice do you have for people who'd love to do what you do?
My biggest piece of advice is not to do it for the glamor or the glory because it's hard to find your way there if you do it for the wrong reasons. If you want fame, consider going to a performing arts school. If you want to be rich, consider starting your own business and learning the ropes to being an entrepreneur. I feel blogging is a great stepping stone or complementary for a lot of people to cement their own careers, whether it be in acting or styling, but blogging itself as a career I feel is very different. You have to be a business owner of sorts and run it like a business if you'd like it to support you like a business would. That means be professional and love your customers and put them as a priority in your life.
Are there any upcoming projects you'd like your fans to know about?
Usually I don't like to reveal anything until it is set in stone. A lot of projects change all the time and some fall through or get pushed aside. I have a few I'm discussing with various people, though, and some sound extremely exciting!
