What Your Libra Decan Says About Your Personality

Represented by a set of scales, Libra is a sign known for balance, generosity and a willingness to keep the peace at all costs.

Of course, just because you were born during Libra season (Sep. 22 to Oct. 22) doesn't necessarily mean that this description suits you perfectly—if it even suits you at all. Perhaps the placement of the planets in your star chart beyond your sun sign has a bigger influence on your personality, or maybe your decan is responsible. Not familiar? Just keep reading for a guide to Libra and its decans.

The Deal With Decans

Despite being a relatively straightforward concept in astrology, decans are a lesser-known aspect than things like your sun sign, or even your moon or rising signs. Essentially, each of the 12 zodiac signs is broken up into three decans by birth date. Anyone who doesn't perfectly fit the description of a justice-seeking Libra may be born in the second or third decan, meaning they're also impacted by the planets that govern Libra's fellow air signs.

Libra's ruling planet is Venus, giving the sign a romantic edge and love for pleasing aesthetics, while the second decan sees additional influence from Aquarius's ruling planet, Uranus, and the third is affected by Gemini's planet, Mercury. But if you're a Libra, which decan do you belong to?

Libra Decan I – Sep. 23 and Oct. 2

Anyone born during the first Libra decan, from Sep. 23 to Oct. 2, is said to have the most widely known and understood Libra traits, since their sun sign is only affected by Libra's ruling planet of Venus. These Libras cherish peace and harmony above all else, and they're constantly working to foster long-lasting and powerful friendships. When things go awry or there are miscommunications, they take it upon themselves to be the mediators and smooth things out, and they're willing to take blame and even have people upset with them even when it's not deserved as long as it creates deeper peace overall. They're fun, likable and socially gifted, and also tend to be quite generous with their love and affection, which means they have plenty of friends in all kinds of unusual places.

Libra Decan II (Aquarius) – Oct. 3 and Oct. 12

Anyone born between Oct. 3 and Oct. 12 belongs to Libra's second decan, which means that in addition to influences from Libra's Venus, they also have a dose of Aquarius's planet, Uranus, to their personalities. Even though these Librans have Aquarius's independent streak, they're still social creatures with deep, powerful connections to a few trusted best friends. They're solution-oriented diplomats who want the best for everyone involved in a situation and aren't above taking a bit of the credit for resolving tough problems. Even when they're overwhelmed, they know how to look calm and in control, which is why people often come to them in times of need.

Libra Decan III (Gemini) – Oct. 13 and Oct. 23

Finally, the third Libra decan lasts from Oct. 13 to Oct. 23. These Libras share influences from Gemini's ruling planet of Mercury, and are therefore even chattier and more communicative than their other Libra counterparts. Not only are they excellent listeners who understand people better than most, but they're also masters of sharing their own ideas in a way that will get them heard. They're well-liked and surround themselves with like-minded people, but they can also sometimes be manipulative if they're not careful. Even so, these skills can get these Libras far in life, especially in the fields of humanities where they'll thrive.
