What Are Decans, Anyway?

Basically, all 12 of the zodiac signs can be further broken up into three, and these three segments are called decans. They're also assigned by birth date, so there's no fancy chart-reading required to find out more about yours. If you've never felt like the core traits of Scorpio align with your personality, you may be born into the second or third decan, and thus have additional sun sign influences from the planets that govern Scorpio's fellow water signs.

Scorpio is one of the rare signs governed by two planets—Pluto and Mars—which can partially account for the sign's complicated reputation. Scorpio Decan I – Oct. 1 to Nov. 1

As with the other first decans of the zodiac, those born during the first Scorpio decan are considered to have the "purest" Scorpio traits, without additional planetary influences on their sun sign. These Scorpios are passionate and dedicated and are often willing to do whatever it takes in order to get ahead. They're also not known for letting others into their inner circles easily, but once they do, they're extremely loyal and dependable to their most trusted friends.

Scorpio Decan II (Pisces) – Nov. 2 to Nov. 11

Thanks to the influence of Pisces' ruling planet, Neptune, second decan Scorpios are known to be much softer than their other Scorpio counterparts. They're still driven, but they're motivated by their dreams rather than pure ambition and have a more optimistic outlook. These Scorpios are also much more sensitive and in touch with their feelings and, therefore, more compassionate. As romantics, they also tend to crave relationships, and they usually are more open and make friends more easily.

Scorpio Decan III (Cancer) – Nov. 12 to Nov. 21

Finally, those born under the third Scorpio decan are influenced by Cancer's ever-changing moon. Unlike the other Scorpios, they're much more family-oriented, usually acting as the "mom friend" of an already tight-knit group. They're also known for moodiness, with an up-and-down temperament that can change as often as the phases of the moon. Still, their charm and tact give them an advantage over other Scorpios, so many of them manage to avoid the nasty stereotypes that accompany the sign.
