What to Do If You Forget About a Friend’s Birthday

What would we do without our friends?

They're there for us during the good times, the bad times and all the in-between. And when a birthday rolls around, usually, we want to do everything in our power to make their day as special as possible. But you know what? Sometimes life gets in the way and we forget. Granted, it doesn't happen too often when it's a close friend, but still, it can happen.

Yes, it was a big mistake on your part, but there's no reason to get upset. Below, we'll give you some ideas for what to do if you forget about a friend's birthday.

Call Them and Apologize

The best thing you can do for a friend when you've forgotten their birthday is to call them and apologize. Be honest about your mistake and the circumstances of why it happened. They might be upset for a little while, but they should appreciate that you owned up to what happened. Make sure you say something along the lines of, "I'm so sorry I missed your birthday. There's no excuse, but I want to wish you a happy belated birthday!" and so on and so forth.

Get Them a Gift From the Heart

If a friend's birthday slipped your mind, there's no need to go out and get them the most expensive gift in the world. In fact, something from the heart is an even better idea. Whether you make a scrapbook of memories the two of you shared, get a simple photo printed out or write them a sincere handwritten letter, they will appreciate that you tried to make up for forgetting their special day.

Make Them a Home-Cooked Meal

There's no problem that food can't fix! If you completely blanked on your friend's birthday, offer to make them their favorite meal. If you're more of a baker, make them some cookies, cupcakes or even a cake. And if a home-cooked meal is absolutely not an option for you, send them a surprise DoorDash or Postmates from their favorite restaurant.

Show Up With Flowers and Balloons

Flowers and balloons are birthday staples, and for good reason! If you know your friend's favorite type of flower, go out and get them a big bouquet and place it in a vase. Some balloons to go with it will make it even better. They're inexpensive and are such an easy fix when you're in a pinch. And if you feel like going all out, get them big number balloons for their birthday. They'll make for a great Instagram post.

Spoil Them With a Fun Day

Since you missed your friend's actual birthday, make a point to show that you love and care for them. And what better way to do that than by spending time with them? Set up a fun itinerary for the two of you and have yourselves a day. Whether you do something simple like go to dinner and a movie, or go all out and take them to a spa, they will love the thought and time you put into making them feel special.
