The Woobles x Hello Kitty and Friends Collab Is THE Cutest Way to Learn to Crochet

Ever since my first successful attempt at crocheting in 2022, thanks to The Woobles and their adorable Fred the Dinosaur Crochet Kit, I'm been positively hooked on the craft.

I've since completed dozens and dozens of crocheted pieces, from cute amigurumi plush figures to clothing, bags and more, and it's all thanks to the super clear and fun directions I got with that first kit. So, when the team at The Woobles reached out and asked if I'd be interested in sampling anything from their new collab with Hello Kitty and Friends, I just had to go after the whole thing. They were kind enough to send me the Cuteness Overload Bundle (normally $148, currently on sale for $130), including all six kits from the collection, and I had an absolute blast with them.

The Accessories

I decided to start my latest Woobling journey with the accessories included in the Cuteness Overload Bundle. They're also available separately as Hello Kitty's Milk Bottle Beginner+ Accessory Kit ($7), My Melody's Rose Beginner+ Accessory Kit ($7) and Cinnamoroll's Star Beginner+ Accessory Kit ($7). It had been a while since I crocheted anything, so I started with the star, which seemed the simplest.  The Woobles x Hello Kitty and Friends: Star official

I scanned the QR code on the card inside the kit, typed in the password, and was greeted with step-by-step video instructions for making the star. Since I generally know what I'm doing by now, I downloaded the text instructions instead, getting to work with one of my trusty 4mm crochet hooks (I practically have a collection at this point) and working with the thick, soft and effortless Easy Peasy yarn.

Creating the star essentially consisted of making two star-shaped pieces, consisting of chains and slip stitches around a magic loop before stuffing and sewing them together.  It was quick and easy, with a pretty adorable result.

Next was the rose, which was slightly more complex, consisting of a chain including double crochets and half double crochets, resulting in a long piece that was then twisted together and sewn into a rose shape. The green leaf pieces also included these stitches before I affixed them to the bottom.

Finally, I got to the milk bottle, the most complex of the three accessories. This one started as a more standard amigurumi with back loop-only and front loop-only stitches, and also included a chained straw (which needed to be sewn inside) as well as an embroidered M for "milk."

At the end of the day, I was pretty happy with all three adorable pieces, and ready to move on to the stars of the show.

Hello Kitty

For the characters, I decided to start with a classic, Hello Kitty herself. She's also available in the Hello Kitty Beginner Kit with custom crochet hook ($40),  which (like the other kits) comes complete with the yarn, safety eyes, stuffing, embroidery needle, stitch markers and an adorable custom Hello Kitty crochet hook.

Just take one look at that Hello Kitty crochet hook and tell me it's not one of the cutest you've ever seen!

The crochet process itself took a little over two hours, from making the egg-shaped body (complete with multiple color changes to make her fur, shirt and overalls), to adding the arms (also involving color changes), the ears, the tail, the embroidery of the nose, whiskers and buttons and, of course, the cute red bow. The end result is so adorable and, coincidentally, also makes a pretty perfect decoration ahead of the Easter holiday.

Cinnamoroll

I wanted another simple-ish project next, so I decided to do the Cinnamoroll amigurumi, also available in the Cinnamoroll Beginner Kit with custom crochet hook ($40).

Again, it came with a stunning crochet hook—this time in an irresistible baby blue.

This time, the process for this easier project took me about 90 minutes, with pretty simple shapes for the body, arms and ears, plus a little extra effort required for the round, cinnamon roll-shaped tail (which wasn't too dissimilar from the rose shape I'd made earlier). I was also slightly obsessed with the baby blue safety eyes. The toughest step was probably the curvature of the mouth, which required me to break out the video tutorial to figure out, but I was quite pleased with how it turned out by the end.

My Melody

Finally, I decided to take on My Melody, also available individually in the My Melody Beginner+ Kit with custom crochet hook ($40). This one was a "beginner+ kit," so I anticipated it might be a little trickier than the rest.

And, of course, this kit added yet another darling crochet hook to my arsenal.

This one was definitely interesting because the composition of the plush wasn't immediately obvious to me upon seeing the picture. I started by making a pink head before changing to white with back loop-only stitches to finish off the body, before adding My Melody's collar in the remaining loops with pink yarn. The face went on as a separate piece, complete with the safety eyes, and from there, I had to embroider the face, make arms, a tail, ears and the bow to complete the adorable character. At the end of two hours, I was delighted with how my My Melody turned out.

Final Thoughts

I loved every minute of crocheting the six pieces in the Cuteness Overload Bundle, and though $130 may be a little pricey for the materials, hooks and instructions, they're a deal compared to buying them all individually, and you really can't put a price on the knowledge you gain from them. Plus, the crochet hooks are truly unique, and the Easy Peasy yarn is easier to work with than any other yarn I've used, never getting tangled or snagged on itself, while creating a cute, bubbly texture to your figures.

If these are your first-ever crochet kits, it's likely they'll take you quite a bit longer as you learn each step, but they make it so easy with step-by-step video tutorials that you'll become a master in no time. Many crocheters also struggle with magic loops—especially at first—and these kits come with the first magic loop ready for you, complete with handy stitch markers. For beginners, I think that ease is worth the extra cost every time.
