Ylona Garcia Reveals the Strong Connection She Has to Her Sultry New Single ‘Don’t Go Changing’

Filipina-Australian singer Ylona Garcia has one powerful set of pipes, and they're on full display in her latest stunning single, "Don't Go Changing."

Every aspect of the song is powerful, from Ylona's soaring voice to the heartfelt lyrics, but we especially love the fact that the video was a collaborative effort with fans. The entire thing was shot on a Samsung Galaxy S21 phone, and Ylona invited fans worldwide to share footage from their own Samsung phones to include aspects of their lives and cultures in the music video itself.

The result is a work of art, and we got the opportunity to chat with Ylona to find out all about it.

Sweety High: What was the songwriting and recording process behind "Don't Go Changing"?

Ylona Garcia: "Don't Go Changing" was written by Gina Kushka, Jonas Jeberg and Marcus Lomax. When I first heard the song, I was thinking that this pinpoints exactly how I feel about a certain situation society says I should be bitter about. The recording process was a wee bit difficult because I wanted it to be perfect, not just for the writers but for everyone that'll hear it. We recorded this song about three times and in the third session, there was this really cool breakthrough that in one take, we were like "Ummm, that's the one."

SH: What does the song mean to you? Was it inspired by a real breakup?

YG: This song to me means being mentally and emotionally at peace with everything that has happened. Though I didn't write "Don't Go Changing," I definitely have a strong connection to it due to a certain situation that had occurred in the past.

SH: Do you have a favorite lyric from the track?

YG: "No matter what I do, I can't ever quit loving you," is my favorite lyric because it's true. In my opinion, I don't think you can ever truly stop loving someone. That love that you have for a person only grows to become what it's meant to be.

SH: How did you decide to make the music video a collaborative effort with fans? What does the final product of the music video mean to you?

YG: The decision to collaborate with my fans was because they play such a huge part of the reasons I've even made it this far. To me, this music video means peace with my true feelings and remembering the importance of roots and foundation.

SH: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

YG: Kindly stream "Don't Go Changing" on all digital streaming platforms whenever and wherever you feel comfortable doing so. Thank you and keep safe!
